I was wondering what would be the best way to put eyes on silver bullets. I found some in atackle shop that had large green eyes that seemed to be almost molded in to the bullet but I can't seem to find them anywhere else. Paint, glue on, stick on... Any suggestions.

Also, anyone change the hooks on these things. The store bought bullets seem to have that crappy O'shaugnessy style hook with some cheap hair on them. what can I do to get a better hook with a more attractive/lifelike material on to a bullet.

Thanks.

I found the Hurrican brand silver bullets from Sports Authority to be real POS. One day, the hooks on every one I had snapped when I got a fish on. I went and swapped them with open eye replacements, and tied the materials on myself. I also took a few of them and added stinger hooks for using whole squid.

If you want to add eyes to them, why not try two part epoxy. I have seen those green eyed bullets at the shows. I hear rave reviews about them, but they get much more expensive than the regular ones. I pelieve there is one guy in NJ who makes them, but I am not sure.

Bullets

I have several bullets with the eyes on them, and i love em. I think that they do attract more strikes

The bullets with eyes seem to have a different mold when maid. I have tried several methods for attaching eyes, but none seem to be up to parr....

On that other site, a link to here would immediately be deleted, so quicknet if you want to read it, PM me and I'll get you the link.

The various green eyed jigs are made by Skip's or Skippy's in Edison, NJ. The Outdoorsman in Palisades Park carries the Skip's bullets without hooks. Any friendly tackle shop can order them that way too. I suspect that the eyes are glued on, because I have lures where the eyes are not centered.

Strikethree - yes, I find the Silver Bullet along with a small teaser up above about 14" to be THE MOST effective fluke catcher I've ever used. And I go back to the early '70s.

There are some very specific tackle and technique requirements to use this setup, ask if you need to, no problem with sharing MY methods. And there are probably many different ways to do it, but to DIRECTLY answer your question, we find the Silver Bullet and teaser combo SO very effective that we no longer even carry standard fluke rigs on my boat anymore.

Lep or anyone else- you mentioned specific tackle/techniques to using the bullets/teaser.Can you please detail? I have been mainly fishing the North Shore out of Huntington and am starting to buy equipment so any tips as to line # vs. bullet/teaser weight would be appreciated. Am planning on using mono to start until I build up my arsenal. Thanks!

Bullets...

Partyboater, I also fish out of Huntington on the J.J. for the early fluke run.
Most of the fishing i do is with bullets, and on the J. J it is rare to use a bullet over 3ounces.Most of the great fishing takes place at the mouth of the Niss. in some really shallow water. You can get away with 1 oz. 65% of the time.

Later in the season, around mid-july they start to go deeper. At that time is seems the big fluke are feeding on small porgies. You may need 8 oz to hold bottom at that time.

For the shallow water, a 24ins of 15 lb flourocarbon tied to a 50lb barrel swivel and the other to a 1 ounce bullet with a trailer hook added. You can add a dropper loop and add a teaser 14 inches up from the bullet. A spearing or two on the hooks.

For that fishing a nice med-lite baitcaster with 12lb big game is the ticket.Braid is not needed bcause you are fishing in some really shallow water.

When the fish move out to deeper water, i will only use bullets as sinkers with no hooks.Several reasons, from what i seen they are eating small porgies and the bullet is not the best to match the hatch! In the deep water i have found the the heavier bullets drop a ton of fish by giving them leverage to toss the hook.
I use the bullet as a subsitute for a regular sinker because i still think it attracts fish over to your rig.....

For that shallow water fishing, I'd do a couple things

Get little white teasers

Bring a light spinning outfit

Carry a few spools of fluorocarbon in various tests. 15# is good for a picky bite, but don't be afraid to go lighter. I would avoid any bright colored line.

That river mouth fishing is dependant on the right wind and tide (isn't everything :) ), so you may have to go heavier if you cannot fish that spot.

Leprechaun,
Yeah, I've run into that closed mentality on the "other" site you mentioned, but George lets us run these forums pretty much the way we want and his philosophy has always been to lean toward open & sharing & I agree with that 100%, so thanks for posting some good information here. Feel free to mention any place that you think has good stuff for other members to take a look at.

You can buy them for a really good price without hooks on them at the various fishing shows and flea markets that are comming in the next few weeks. Then you can put whatever hook/teaser on it that you like. There's going to be a market/forum/auctionsponsored by the New York Sportfishing Federation the weekend of 2/14 - 2/16 at the Freeport Recreation Center. Lot's of good stuff, great info and seminars and groups and organizations.

jumpin in a bit late on this, but......

if you can't get to the shows, i know sea isle in freeport sells the bullets without hooks, both with and without eyes (unless they've stopped stocking them in the past couple of months)....

I think I've also seen them in J&H, but i can't swear to that one.....
