Hi All,

Over the past couple of days I have noticed more moderators on the boards. How about a little introduction on them or from those that will now be 'overseeing' us. Togmaster and EC did a very nice job on the day that the 'Ask the Pros' board went up. Introducing themselves, their background, and how they hope to make this site better.

How are modertors selected? I am not trying to bend any noses out of joint, I just thought it would be beneficial to all the members here to know who was who and what was what.

Thanks,

somoan

Hi Brian,

I think that George offers the "job" based on participation on the different boards. At least, that is how he approached me.

JPFsurf. I think the name says it all.

Flounder has been around for a long time and offered a lot of advice. I don't really ever check in on the kayak forum, but I'd guess he's got one ;)

Say it aint so

Bri, good question..

Chris, I would like to think there is more to do with the process than just participation and a screen name that get the "job". If its all about a name then maybe "Parker on my Face" should be overseeing us all.

Seriously, I really dont or should I say didnt have a problem with how George has selected any of the moderators in the PAST. I had thought a member would have to have some knowledge as well as some history or seniority here on Noreast to become a Mod, As well as being able to respond when you are being questioned for statments you have made, instead of avoiding them. I would hope that they would have some awareness and common sence when dealing with our members being it is a direct reflection of Noreast.

Maybe some of us should suggest certian people to become Moderators being that they will have a pretty big influence on our fourms. Or maybe Noreast could ask us who we think our new MOD's should be.

What is a moderator

Well guys a Moderator on this site is not there for knowledge as you all may think! George can get an idea of the guys here from there posts and know if they have a clue as to what they can contribute. The purpose of the moderators here is mainly language content and abuse of the site. The moderators on most of the boards are well known people in the fishing community and on this site. Some of the Moderators such as Ec ,myself, Capt Neil, Crazy Al and others are all very knowledgeable people and have a lot to offer. This is why we have our on Board. As far as general fishing, Boating angler these boards are more of over all topic type board. The other boards are specific type boards. They have a sole purpose of giving members the chance to speak to well seasoned Capt?s and fishermen with great knowledge and years of experience. So understand General boards will be moderated by guys known here very well on the board or have offered to take the time to do so. As far as having your own discussion board this is a field where a back round will be needed. Not to brag but the guys here with there own boards are very good and well know in the fishing business. So that is why we run and moderate these specialty boards. The general boards are run by choice of Nor east and there contributions in the past. Hope this clears it up for you and have a great holiday guys see you at the Bash.

No harm; No Foul!

Hey TM,

I was just curious...asking a question. I think both you and Chris summed it up pretty well for me. Like I said before you did real well with an introduction for yourself form the getgo of your new board. I thought maybe either someone from Noreast or the new moderator themselves might provide a little introduction, background, etc. on the new Mod. Like I said before this was not intended to get anyones panties bunched up.

wires crossed

Mike

Just to clarify, I am not questioning you or any of the OLDER Mod's here. Re-read my post and you will see what I mean. It is obvious that you guys have knowledge in various fishing applications and know how to moderate a board. You guys were not the ones in question. I would think that you guys also got asked to Mod because of your knowledge, As others should be, and not because you are a member of the 200+ post club. I kind of disagree with you and notice a contradiction in your statement about Mods having/not having fishing smarts, Or having a background in a specific area. Again this is not directed at you or any of the SPECIALTY boards. You guys have a place here, period. and You guys also know who you are.

As I had said earlier I was just wondering if there was a certian type of requirement besides what was posted. As in everything there lessons to be learned and mistakes to be made. A member is just that but a Mod has a a Direct tie to Noreast....

Thanks for the info Mike.

Jay and Brian,

I haven't noticed any posts by either of them since this has been posted so I don't think they are ignoring you. They just haven't logged in yet. I wouldn't be surprised if they're fishing with Alberto's recent report.

You are right, there is more to picking a moderator than just a name or length of membership. Like Mike said, for most part, the moderators on the general boards are here to keep things running smoothly, editing content, language and keeping some debates from getting out of hand. The site is growing rapidly and with more members, it was a lot for George and the rest of the staff at Noreast to handle on their own. So some of us, that obviously were spending too much time here anyway ;), were approached to help out.

Since we are responsible for editing some posts, it was important that "we" have not been troublemakers in the past. And you're right, we should also have some fishing knowledge. But I never profess to be an expert and hang out here to learn all that I can from others. I think the rest would feel the same way.

I was kidding about jpfsurf, with the name says it all. I think he was a great choice for the position besides the name. He spends a lot of time on the site, so he'll be able to catch what needs to be edited. He's posted or responded to the surf topics with a lot of helpful information and reports, so he's knowledgable and willing to share it.

Flounder has been around for a long time too and helped out many, including myself. Like I said, I haven't spent much time on the "yak" forum though.

What you can and cannot moderate?

Funny you can Moderate a board but you can't moderate a brain:( I see the Yak board and this is un called for even though guys do get to me at times I handle it in a polite way that was out of hand and I am sure Georg eis just to busyt right now moving the office to deal with it. So when he has the time I bet he will deal with it for now stay safe and have a happy hoiday to all and see you at the winter bash2003

Chris,

Speaking for myself.

When I said "respond to questions and statements made" I was talking about in the past. It has nothing to do with him responding to this post what was done was done. It was way before this. I dont like to question ethics especially those of this site. I was just courious as to how one becomes as Mod. There should be some guideline set, as I am sure George has one. Just wanted some insight for some of us....

Yes Doughboy, taking up on al's post,I don't know how much west I can go,Maybe JERSEY next.I hear there's still fish in montauk, maybe I'll head that way tomorrow.
I'm a little unsure as to what I have missed, but anyway.I was asked if I could help out the site,So I stepped forward.Being a moderator does not make us any different then the next guy,We are here just to make sure things run as smooth as possible.Along with a few other duties as well.I try to help Everyone out to the best of my knowledge.I'm not going to get crazy over this.I was asked to help,so I am just gonna continue to do what I enjoy doing.
Lets go fish,SHE'S not singing yet..

Hi all,

Oooops!!!

Seems like I missed something.

Well here goes. Who am I, what are my credentials and how did I become a Moderator.

I am Capt Neil Faulkner, a USCG licensed Captain for about 15 years. I have experience upon LI Sound, Shinne**** Bay and Great South Bay.

I am the chief cook and bottle washer at CUSTOM FISHING RODS by CAPT NEIL. The means my company has 1 employee, ME! I have been a member of RodCrafters for about 8 years. I attend at least 1 rod building seminar a year and usually 2 seminars a year. This keeps me abreast of all the new products and techniques along with communicating with some of the best custom rod builders in the US of A.

The Fishing Rod Forum had an excellent Moderator and the many hats he wore kept him too busy. I was asked if I would take on the responsibility. I said yes and here I am. I hope that you folks are satisfied with my answers and requests for your helpful input. Many of you folks have much more knowledge on certain topics than I do and I appreciate your sharing of this knowledge with us. It is the unselfish sharing that makes this Nor'east web site so good. Thanks to the professionalism of you all, the only editing I have had to do has been on my own posts. Please keep sharing!

Wow.. How did I miss this thread.,Wow.. How did I miss this thread.

Ok, for the folks who are in question of my fishing abilities and why I was asked to be a NE moderator… here are just a few of my credentials.

I've been an active member, supporter and participant for organizations such as the IGFA, LIBBA, NYSFF, RFA, SCA and NYFTTA. The reasons why I support such organizations are due to their strong dedication to promote this sport we so endure.

In addition, I've traveled extensively to seek out many elusive fishes that tug the end of my line. I've fished throughout most part of the United States and other countries such as South America (Brazil), Central America (Nicaragua and Honduras), Mexico (Cabo San Lucas, Cancun, Cozumel and Mazatlan) and the Canadian borders.

I've also been cited in many publications such as the Newsday, Daily News, The New York Post, NY Times, The Fi$herman, NorEast, Offshore and the SaltWater Sportsmen.

All in all, during the process, I've been very fortunate to be able to meet and fish with many national and international fishing celebrities throughout this globe which am honored and humbled to call them my personal friends.

My interest lies in big game, surfcasting, bottom & wreck, Extreme, Kayak, flycasting, light tackle and freshwater fishing… With strong emphasis on chasing those bottom dwellers and the elusive stripers.

Furthermore, I am a field tester for several fishing products and fortunate to be able to spend many days on the water enjoying what I do best. The previous years, I've been able to log over 265 days a year on the water and this year is no exception.

As to those who still wondering about my personal background… I was born in Hong Kong, raised in Brazil and for the past 30 years, a proud citizen of this great United States!

With nearly 40 years of fishing experience, my goal is to promote this wonderful sport to the best of my ability and get as many new comers to partake this wonderful sport. Its all part of giving back with great hopes that this sport will endure as long as our body of waters exists.

With all this said… I hope I am capable enough to share my experiences with you and with hopes that someday you will reciprocate back to those of need.

Tight Lines!

I quit smoking in 1997, but I wouldn't turn down a cup of coffee.

My involvement with the Kayak board preceeds the board itself. I was one of very few fishing from my kayak 4 years ago. I bugged George to put up a kayak board, but he wasn't convinced.

It was a year ago that he asked me to moderate the kayak forum, and I begged him to wait until Spring. But so many others were asking for a kayak board that he just put one up. For a long time, it was a free-for-all, with no moderator at all.

Although I was SUPPOSED to be the moderator from the beginning, updating the computer took a back seat to more important items. I guess when photographs of feces were posted, George figured that someone better keep an eye on it from day to day.

The quality of a bulletin board comes from it's USERS, not who moderates the discussion. I always leave room for opinions that I may not share. My job is just to try and keep things civilized.

I am not in the kayak business, nor do I sell aftermarket accessories. I do not owe allegiance to one brand of kayak, nor do I feel that any one brand can be everything to everybody.

The kayak forum is not MY forum, it's YOURS. Don't post pictures of feces or links to commercial sites, and you'll never know I'm there (unless you have a question for me).

For those who prefer to post pictures of feces, or hyperlinks to commercial sites, I apologize. You can't please everybody. I hope you find an eager audience, elsewhere.
