I heard that there is now access for kayaks into Merrick Bay. It is apparently near the Merrick landfill.
It is a calm bay with very good fluke action.

does anyone have any more details on the launch site(directions, etc)

Thanks,

Evan :)

I'm headed there later today with my family.Loaded my trailer last night with the canoe and 2 kayaks

You head to the Merrick landfill and Levy Park is inside there.Entrance to the landfill is about 1/4 mile east of the Meadowbrook off Merrick Road...south side.Go into the gates and past the booth( someone will be in the booth directing folks to the landfill or the Levy area)You make a right just before the landfill area. Can't miss it.
Kayak launch has been available for 3 years now.
Do NOTattempt to launch/return or be anywhere near the launch at dead low tide with a kayak or canoe! It gets shallow and muddy and is no fun.

Low tide today is around 1PM or so.I'm not 100% certain...

There is a really nice walk around the trails and up to the windmill.
I must say they did a really nice thing creating this place

and maintaining it.We use the nature trails often and the views from up top are really beautifull.

I promised myself I'd take advantage of it more in 2008.Its just about in my backyard and 2 minutes from my house...

It's in Levy park which is part of the old Merrick landfill. Entrance is off Merrick Rd just east of the Meadowbrook Parkway. Gotta warn ya the launch is into Meadow Brook Creek which is very shallow. Just mud at the launch around low tide. It's a long paddle out to the bay, which is a pain, when the water is so shallow you can't stick the paddle in without hittin' bottom. Check it out.

I never fish Merrick bay.I've heard there are a few deep holes but for some reason I never fish in that there.I'm always by the bridges or drifting the inlet ( in a boat...not a kayak!).
Last year I was on the Levy Park pier watching folks catch all types of stuff right off the end.Massive schools of peanuts all over the place like clouds drifting in the sky.
Amazing how areas that are in your own neighborhodd get overlooked

With gas prices so high I really need to rethink my game plans!

I like the paddle down the creek :).its about 3/4 of a mile to Merrick Bay but the wildlife is nice and I usually will pick up some trash along the way.
Yeah...I'm one of those types that abhores seeing cans & bottles, wrappers and flotsam drifting around or clinging to a tree branch.

if there is water its a relaxing paddle :tu
rotected from the wind and a relaxing float.
If the tide is out its a chocolate milkshake consistency muddy mess

and the wind tends to whip across the bay just as you enter it.
Not fun in a canoe...
but I bring a kayak paddle and make life easier

Beautifull day today and I'm outta here to go enjoy it

It's in my back yard as well but never launched from there yet. Spoke to a guy that works there a couple of weeks ago, and found out they do paddle tours of the bay each week. Think I'm going to try it with my wife.
