Hi,

You have seen this blank mentioned in other Forums. Very good info.

I have that blank in the shop and am starting to build it today.

Give me 3 weeks and it will be ready for the "finest togs" in Long Island Sound or any place else.

Stay tuned.

Hi,

I am cutting the tip back to a #12 from a #7.
This rod will handle 12 oz sinkers with ease.
It is fiberglass so it will flex with a load.

The Calstar GF 700M is a composite blank, stiffer, a #8 tip and rated 20 to 50 # test.

2 completely different rods.

sandman,

Hi,

Yes, I am installing the guides Roberts wrap/spiral wrap and on the West Coast they call it an ACID WRAP.

And it will be available for YOU to test as it is a demo rod. YOU get to fish with it!

I wanna be a copy cat

Hey Cap: I'm a novice rod builder and would like to build a tog rod for myself using the same blank. I'm a little tentative about what components to use and spacing required for the spiral warp. Could you possibly list the components from grip material to tip top (I was thinking sic guides) and the number, type and spacing of the guides. Thank you very much.

Hi,

Here goes.

1. Spine the blank, guides go un top of spine, conventional rod.

2. Determine what size sinker you will use most. Attach a large rubber band thru sinker, use other end to slide down the blank to determine where you will cut the tip. I wanted to fish 12 oz sinker so I slid the attached sinker down the blank an inch or two at a time. Then I would raise and lower the blank as if fishing. When I had the right feel I marked the blank and cut it.

3. I determined how long I wanted the finished blank to be and cut butt. I opted for 7'4".

4. In my case it turned out to be a # 12 tip top.

5. I am using Fuji BHNLG Hardloy guides, 20, 16, 12, 10, 10, 10, 10, 10, 10. Do static deflection to determine where the guides will be located. You might use less guides as I am doing the Roberts (spiral) wrap.

6. Fuji DPSM 24 reel seat.

7. Cork fore grip and shrink tubing over butt wind butt. You choose length that fits you.

8. And a butt cap with a partridge in a pear tree. There you have it!!

No partridge thou.

Have a blast building it your way!

Rodwinder,

Hi,

I love how it feels already. Waiting for the guides to arrive. My fishing pals are lined up to try it. I think when I show up on a boat with it I better bring a second rod so I have something to fish with.

As much as I appreciate the new blanks the designers keep coming up with, I still like having fun with an oldie but goodie.

I will definitely let you know. There is a chance I might be running some trips in LI Sound in Nov. I hope it happens so I can get plenty of time to catch blacks with it.

Hi all,

Well last Friday I finally got to try this new rod in the ocean. I had 12 oz sinker on in turbulent seas. It felt good. As the seas grew rapidly we decided not to double anchor, safty reasons. We started to get a bite BUT disretion was the better part of valor so we went home.

Tomorrow I will be on the Celtic Quest, freezing my butt off, and hopwefully giving this rod a big time workout.

I will post what the outcome is.

Hi all,

Welllllllllllllllllllll!!!

I finally got up in the Sound with 'WHITE CHIN" and guess what????

NOT ONE BLACK FISH showed its face. Honest!

The reports I heard on the radio in the morning mirrored our results.

Guess they took a day off.

Will try again!

Hi,

More learned fishermen than me think the snow storm chilled off the Sound down deep. This would cause the blacks to chill out. Hopefully we will get some warm sun to warm things up a bit. Normally this is too soon for the blacks to hibermate.
