Hi , I'm coming across the sound from Clinton Ct. I heard Mattituck is almost directly across and has some great fluke ( doormats) and sea bass fishing. Can anyone give me some info as to where to start fishing. are there any landmarks? Is there a bouy or channel drop off? I'd definitely be willing to share info on fishing over here (Great bass , and bluefish spots). Also what bait, tackle should I bring? Thanks so much. Also if theres a better place close by that area let me know. Thanks again.

Hello MadMike,

MidSound fluking this time of the year is all about finding the bait. Most fluke have completed their "major" spring migration. The fish have now settled-in around all the points, shoals, and inlets/creeks/rivers. Find an area that holds bait, and you'll find the fluke.

Horton's Point as well as the area all around Mattituck inlet would be a great place to start. The problem with this time of the year is that the porgies have moved into that area in great numbers, making it much more difficult to get to the fluke. We also have a sea robin epidemic.

A good chart will show you where all the major drop-offs are. This time of year the fluke in the area can be found from three feet of water all the way to over 100. Once again, locating the bait is the key.

Fluking the New York side

Hello mad Mike,
I usually launch out of Norwalk and come across to Nissequogue river. Its between Eatons Neck and Crane Neck. You can come out of Bridgeport too.

Early in the migration we had several outstanding trips there coming home with a minimum of 9 keepers per trip,

The fish have settled in on the ledges and obstructions, We have taken them on drifts starting at 50 to as low as 12ft.

You need to watch the bottom and hold the ledges etc...

Plan on porgies, chopper blues and an occasional striper in this area. Lots of Robins, so cut em up and use strips. They are dynamite! We were in the area Wednesday for 9 keepers and Yesterday from 7 am to 12pm with 3 fish 5-7 lbs and about 20 shorts, four blues to 5 lbs, and a half cooler of nice size porgy.
