Actually there are good population of blackfish in the bay, but nobody targets them. You might have a chance to catch early big triper on the bank, though June is the prime time. You probably catch a few wolffish in mid May while cod fishing.

Large striped bass enter the bay and are feeding on live herring. I work on a charter boat out of sesuit harbor and we catch some great stripers. The bay is one of the best untaped resources for fishing around and all people think about is blues and bass. there are many untaped resources to be had

There is a spectacular year round black sea bass and winter flounder fishery. These fish can be caught all throughout the summer on some of the local rock piles. Also, come august, there is some of the best fluke fishing around in barnstable harbor, billingsgate, brewster flats, and of course p-town. In another month, you will be able to catch cod right off of long point light and inside the harbor. The tog fishery will be heating up soon also. Try the party boat albatross for sea bass and flounder. Or is striped bass, bluefish, tuna, or is your fancy check the boat i work on out at capecodsportfishing.com. Best codfishing around for the price. Average 550lbs a trip and that is small. Check it out.

Hope I offered some insight. If you like to fish the bay maybe we can exchange some info.

Cape Cod Bay Flounder

BB - you seem to have a real good handle on the Cape Cod Bay situation. Man, do I miss the bottom fishing to be had there in May. We used to go out to the Target Ship and drift- yes drift - no chum- no anchor- and just Load Up on Flounder and Blacks.A flat of snadworms is all you needed. If we wanted just blacks we would cast up against the Target Ship and let the bait fall alongside it. 3 of us would fill the largest Igloo cooler you could buy. This was in the Mid 80's. By the early 90's the blacks had disappeared and we had to anchor and chum for a decent catch of flounder. Occasionally we would see huge stripers chasing mackerel. We caught a few but no huge ones. How is the flounder fishing there now? Have not fished it since 1992. Last June I fished Ptown harbor and did great on the Fluke and the flounder fishing seemed decent too per the catches in the rental skiffs. So maybe there is hope.

morning dew

I work on a charter boat in Sesuit Harbor in Dennis, Ma. I also commercial striper fish on my days off. Most of my fishing is done right outside the harbor. From the jetties right to corporation beach has got more rock piles and wrecks i have ever seen. It is a great area to drift or anchor. You can catch flounder, fluke, sea bass, and blackfish here all throughout the summer. If I have a full day off I will venture to p-town. I have had some excellent days there this past year. Early in the year I was able to take many codfish limits right of the drop and the mackeral fishing was great. As the summer progressed on I would catch stripers and fluke right off the bathhouse. Also inside the harbor offers some endless opportunities. I also have to push the boat I work on, The Janine B. check out the website at capecodsportfishing.com....if i can be of anymore asistance drop me a line.

BB- Looks like a nice operation on your boat. I have had some great days in Ptwm with the Fluke and last year we did a Fluke /Striper combo trip om my friends boat up there - Diamond Jigged stripers and blues off Race Point until around 11am and then got some nice fluke in the harbor- this was late June. I do not understand why one of the whale watch boats in Ptown does not run trips to Stellwagen in April and May - they are so close they could do 1/2 (5-6hr) day trips -after all the limit is 10 fish and when its halfway decent there you can easily get that in a few hours. I even bought up this idea to the captian of the Cee-Jay but I guess they see no need for it with all the other great fishin in the summer.Something to think about .

MD- The Dolphin Fleet out of P-Town used to run trips to the fishing ledge and surrounding areas. However, that fishery was tapped out due to extensive commercial fishing pressure. If you have your own boat i highly recommend jigging for cod around P-Town. Pick up a capt. seagulls chart and most of the basic spots are marked.

BB- how do I get the Capt Seagulls Chart ? I heard all about the spring Cod jigging off Ptwn. My friend said at times the fish had hearded schools of sandeels into shallow water and you could actually see the fish under the boat ! This was two years ago (MAY)- by the time we got up there it was over.Instead we ended up connecting with some huge stripers off of Chatham that were feasting on large sand eels . Most of my codfishing up there was out of Nauset Inlet off Marconi and the Radar Dome. I still think being that Stellwagen is 8 miles off of Ptown there would be a viable market for a serious party boat up there-espcially during the off season of April /May/June. According to the Capt of the Cee Jay they had a day in Mid May when they had over 20 cod on the boat while fishing for flounder just outside the breakwater. This could be a good option in rough weather.

Look for cape cod bay seagulls charts online or either at your local tackle shop. In my mind, P-town is one of the most productive fishing areas in new england. It offers endless oppotunities to catch fish. I have caught flounder, fluke, blackfish, cod, bass, blues, tuna all around the tip of p-town. Plus if the fishing is not good around p-town you can run to the race, billingsgate, or the path/pamet. I highly recommend giving codfishing/mackeral fishing off p-town a shot. I make the run out of sesuit harbor and i can make it there in short order. Let me know if i can provide you with more information. It is nice to talk to people about fishing the bay because it offers more opportunities than just bass, blues, and tuna
