I am a new comer to this site and I am really excited. What a great way to share knowledge. I am looking at buying a 1983 23' Sea Craft that is powered by a 1997 Mariner 225 EFI. If anyone who has owned this engine could drop a few lines about their history with it, I would really appreciate it. I think it has about 800 hrs on it, is that a lot for this engine? G-Gordon.

I never had a Mariner but I have had 6 outboard motors in my life thus far and buying a motor with 800 hrs. is kind like buying a car with 130,000 miles. She could go another couple/few years depending on how the motor was taken care of but most likely your coming to powerhead replacement time and more.
Also make sure the gas tank on the Seacraft has been changed and that the stringers are sound as well as the hull.
Good luck,
Alan
