Cops: L.I. Man Fights Back at Would-Be Robbers

WEST HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (1010 WINS) -- Police say a Long Island homeowner was involved in a shootout with two men who attempted to rob him Monday night.

Two men, one of them armed, came up to the 35-year-old West Hempstead man as he was getting out of his car in his driveway at Oakford Street around 9:25 p.m., police said. The victim, a licensed pistol holder, pulled out his handgun and returned fire after one of the men tried to shoot him, officials said.

No one was injured.

Jose D. Celis, 30, was arrested after fleeing the scene and charged with attempted murder, attempted robbery, criminal use of a firearm, and criminal possession of a weapon.

Police are looking for the second man.
