Can someone either confirm or negate what a friend told me?

He said that mahi mahi will show up around the NA bouy out of FIsland inlet from mid-July through August.

What type of tackle is required (he claims medium action spinning), and is there a regulation on size and bag limit?

Thanks, Somoan

Hey Somoan,
I was free diving at the NA , either end of July, or first week Aug. They were there. (with tons of skipjack). Look, or cast at ANYTHING floating! Even small stuff like 2 x 4's. Medium action spinning may be OK, unless you get a 4 or 5 footer. Should still be fun! Average fish is smaller ofcourse. I don't think there is a size or bag limit, but I'm not sure. Gorgeous fish underwater!

Somoan,

Find the high fliers(pot buoys) or any debris floating in the water.Take a piece of cut ballyhoo and let it sink naturally right next to the ball. After you hook one be sure to keep it in the water till the next person hooks up because they will follow the hooked fish.Once another is hooked pull one of the fish in the boat.Hope this helps, but be sure to leave some for the next guy,as you can really load your boat up quickly this way.Only take what you need and we'll always have these beautiful fish around to catch.

Good luck and be safe!

THANKS

Thanks Folks,

Besides ballyhoo, what other types of lures and bait am I looking to use?

Is it possible to also use a conventional set up?

TunaTamer, what are the high fliers...pot bouys? are you reffering to either lobster/crab traps and pots?

Thanks Again!

Somoan,

That's right.Find the high fliers(pot buoys)with nice water and you will usually find the mahi. They're great to catch on light action spinning rods! The lures that Polodog has pictured are called (Dolphin Delights) and are also my favorite to troll with.Last year there was an unbelievable run of mahi, caught a few on every trip.Let's hope it's the same or better this year!

Good luck and hope you get some Mahi this year!

Listen to the Dr. I hae been taking live killies to the canyon forever (the biggest you can find) with a small live bait hook in the lips, mahi will go nuts, also you can live chum a couple bounce them on the guwale lightly to stun them, they then swim erratically, do this to 3 -4 killies then drop in the hooked one

If you can't reach the flyers, they do come in way closer. I've caught them on tiny bits of bunker chum (only thing that was available while sharking). If you can frenzy them up with chum/bait bits, this is good. Casting feathers, even heavy shiny spoons, fast retrieve. Wire leader.

Tuna's advice on leaving a fish in the water is very good. When casting to flotsom, it is common to only pick up one, unless you leave one in, or use bait.

If you like shooting pics, take them right away, color fades pretty quick.

Tunatamer or Polodog, can you post the company name of the Dolphin Delights?

By the way, anyone notice worms while filleting these fish? I passed on a sample of sashimi while cleaning... A favorite fish to eat still!

What is the closet that they will come in? I guess it depends on the sea temperature and weed lines...right?

Also at what speed would you troll at?

Thank you to all and if you folks still have things to add I am willing to listen.

I just posted another thread about a new MAYDAY call that came out this morning @ 8:30 am while I was looking for bunker.

Hey guys, Im new to the offshore game cause i just got my first boat. 26 footer. Any way I do most of my fishing in moriches. Will the nahi mahi come anywhere reachable near the moriches inlet. Or should i make the run to Jones. Also how far out is the NA buoy. Sorry if its a stupid question.

Weaser,

As I understand it, the NA bouy is approximately...give or take...close to 10 miles out of Fire Island inlet. If one was to leave Moriches I have no idea how long that trip would be. It would most likely be a waste of your time to go all the way to Jones Inlet.

Anybody else?

Weazer,
Just run south out of Moriches. Look for warm clean water. Look for structure, which in the case of Mahi is simply anything floating ...bouys, wood, flotsom, heavy weed lines, anything, even those **** mylar balloons.

It is believed that dolphin get caught in the stream and are swept up here. Once the water cools, they die. They cannot make the trip against the stream. Very fun to catch while sharking to pass the time. I've also found that using a fresh fillet of the fish is best for bluedogs. For me the best lure is to take an egg sinker and put it up inside a plastic squid(onces used for fluke)then tread line through lead and attack hook that is no wider than the body of the squid. Works all the time for me near the highflyers.

Good Luck

mocean,

There are a few different companies that make them,I get mine from Offshore Angler. The ones in that catalog are made by No Alibi called Dolphin Delights. They also have some in other catalogs like Finest Kind,J&b,and Stalker called Dolphin Candy. All are pretty much the same design just different companies. If you never heard of these catalogs let me know and I will give you their websites.Hope this helps.

Thanks Tunatamer,
I found some in Sports authority, not a wide selection. I could use those catalogue sites. What size colors are best. Also, they seem pretty light for long casting. Are you trolling them?

Thanks,

mocean,

I usually troll with them but you can cast them with light tackle.Try the following websites but I would request a catalog from all the following because there are alot of lures and tackle that are not on the websites.I think you will really like these sites,www.basspro.com,www.stalkeroutfitters.com,www.finestkind.net,and www.jmtackle.com.Let me know what you thought of them.Every time I have one of those catalogs in my hands I have to hide from my wife because I spend hundreds at a time and can't put them down!
