Hello phishthetide ,

From time to time I've stopped at the Mag. Pier and caught a few fish. However, that's not one of my favorite piers to say the least. On several occasions, I've encountered several "interesting" characters with other intentions in mind.

If you are planning to fish it… I found that the best time to fish it is during the top of the night flood tide whenever there are baitfish present!

You can score stripers, weakies, blues, fluke, shad and herring.

Caution: Should you decide to invest a lot of time there…. I strongly recommend that you bring lots of BIG fishing buddies along and be alert. ;)

Be "safe" and have a good time.

HEY AL!!

I resemble that. :( Because of location and being transportationaly challenged, I spend most of my time at Magnolia, and the only "intention on my mind" is to fish. We don't all have boats and buddies with boats, and are at the liberty to take 2 and three day trips to Rhode Island every other week ya know. I've met some really great people there and yes, a fair share of "characters" as well, but never have I felt the need to have "lots of BIG fishing buddies along". I'm surprised at you.... By the way just where are those "favorite piers" of yours? :)

Night Caster I'm from LB startes fishing at magnolia about ten years ago. The only time I caught stripers there was early spring while the herring were still around. There are plenty of better places to fish in LB besides Magnolia. Try the beach after the crowds are gone.

Can you be a little more specific Angus? After all, it is a "Long" beach. Seriously, I know that there are some good spots and many not so good spots. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Sorry about that... I usually fish at pacific and roosevelt between the jeeties and the ropes during beach hours. In the center there is a hole that can be fished after 6:30.
Clams first, then I try bucktails or plugs. At night I use fresh bunker if I can get it. High water only end of incoming start of outgoing. Had some success in the center of LB or in the west end between Georgia avenue and east atlantis beach. Being that I am lazy I do not like to walk all along the beach.

If you want email me [email protected] and we'll hook up some time. from now until mid july the beach is good.

Hope this helps

I've gone there in winter for herring several times and done well. But, that's the oly thing I've gone there for. Wish I could help more!

Nightcaster-
I seriously doubt Al was refering to anglers like yourself. Yes, many people go to Magnolia to fish and enjoy good company. But, you cannot deny that, as with many other public places built for a specific reason, some bad apples do go to Magnolia, and fishing is the last thing on their minds. No where in his post did Al say that all Magnolia regulars are "characters". Is the angling sport being invaded by the PC police? HE MEANT NO OFFENSE

Bacala,

I meant nothing by it either. But fishing mirrors life. Unless you have your own boat, or are on a private charter you're going to encounter other people. We are surrounded by all types. I've encountered "characters" at the supermarket, on the train and even in church. It doesn’t stop me from shopping, going to and from any place, or going to pray. Staying "alert" as Al put it is a wise thing to do no matter where you are. But he did seem to make some sort of comparison between Magnolia and other piers that he has fished at making mention in the following sentence about the "characters". He is entitled to feel that way, and even to voice his opinion, just as I am entitled to respond if I feel the need to. It has nothing to do with PC. This is a discussion board and we’re just a bunch of guys sittin’ around the fire discussin’, right? Now whose turn is it to put another log on?

No problem !! You make a valid point, there's "characters" everywhere.Believe me, even on a private boat, you deal with them (much the same way you do when driving).I gotta hand it to you, many other people would have went off as a result of someone disagreeing with their post. You did not, that is admirable :)Like you said, we're just a bunch of guys sitting around talking fishing. On that note, since you said you live in Long Beach, and cannot get around too easily, there's a shore location there that I haven't fished, but my friend took me duck hunting from last winter. It's right on Reynold's and looks like it would be good, not too much pressure. Unfortunately, I cannot remember exactly where it is. Next time I speak to my friend, if remember I'll ask him ! Good fishing :)

To Al defense there definatly are some characters there. Would like to think I am NOT one of them.
About ten years ago a guy stuck his head in a bucket of chum for fifty bucks, got sick and then jumped in the channel to wash off. No this has nothing to do with fishing but it was a great story. I wasn't there but a few guys have had confirrmed it.

Bacala,

You brought a big smile to my face! That's what this is all supposed to be about and you hit the nail right on the head. Thanks for the tip too. I see the area that you spoke of across from the pier but I don't know how to get in there either. I would really appreciate it if you would let me know when you find out. Last season I was almost jumped into the water after fishing all night, it was about 7am, I was alone on the pier (remember 9/11 was still fresh on my mind) and suddenly the stone cold silence is broken by a foray of shotgun blasts! I didn't know what the **** was happening. I didn't know you could hunt so close to a residential area.

Really glad to hear that!!!:)Yeah, during duck season, that area can sound like a shooting range. That's funny that you almost dove into the water :)I live in Massapequa about 1/2 mile frm the bay and during duck hunting, if the wind is out of the South, you hear tons of shots early in the morning. Yes, believe it or not, you can hunt that close to homes, but there are many regs to make it as safe as possible. I'm not personally a hunter, I just went with my friend to watch and see if I'd like it(dont think so :))And, I will certainly try to get that exact location as well as how to access it. Good Fishing!!

Hello folks and NightCaster

This is a good debate... But with all do respect, if I've offended anyone with my remarks… I apologize! Perhaps I need to clarify my statement before this gets carried away.

First of all, what I meant by the "I've encountered several "interesting" characters with other intentions in mind."
The truth of the matter is, the few times I've fished there (late wee hours of the night)…. There were some shady "NON" Fishermen type drinking alcohol and smoking funny stuff! Mind you, that did not bother me… but what really got me going was the "Childish behavior and the racial slurs" that was addressed directly at me.

The second confrontation was a time where some rowdy folks in three sports car with loud music (if you could call that) and relieved themselves in front of their misses. That was OK… but when they helped themselves with my extra fishing equipment (lying by the rail) and treated like it was a toy. That just didn't go well with me.

Fortunately, on both occasions, I walked away without any major confrontations… but god only knows what I would have done if I was pushed and shoved.

So you see, I did not mean anything "negative" about my comment. That is why I was vague and ended by saying… Be alert, safe and have a good time! I hope I've clarified that! :)

Gusman and Bacala, Thank you for coming to my rescue… but I just thought that I should clarify it so there is no misunderstanding. ;)

Anyway... Now whose turn is it to put another log on? :)

Sorry to hear about all of that.Like you said, at least nothing worse happened! It is a real shame that a person can't access our natural resources without feeling like you're in some nightclub or whatever. Anyway, glad you're ok :)

Al,

I'm sorry for your bad experiences at Magnolia. I'm sure if I had similar experiences I would be talking about them as well. But I once again want to make it clear that I wasn't taking you to task for voicing your opinion and sharing your experience. As a matter of fact, if you read back, my response started with a "tongue in cheek" statement of "I resemble that" in an attempt to soften or lighten up my response. I think you're a great guy and I don't even know you. I don't think that you would ever say or do anything to unnecessarily offend anyone.

As far as ~~>
Gusman and Bacala, Thank you for coming to my rescue… but I just thought that I should clarify it so there is no misunderstanding.... Goes...

Being that there was no attack, there was no need for anyone to come to your defense. My second post clarified, and I believe defused any sense that I was attacking you. And my third I thought spelled it out specifically......

Al,

I hope you didn't think I meant anything by it.

As a matter of fact we all acted like perfect adults, the discussion ran it's course, Guzman has already given me some of his good spots on the beach, and it looks like Bacala and I might go fishing together sometimes in the near future. See? We can be good when you're not looking.

By the way... wazzup wit da "Hello folks and NightCaster "? Now I ain't a "folk" like everyone else? :) (see the smiley face?)

Anyway, this is way too much typing, when's high tide? :)
