when they show

Well the macks showing up will be a tough call this yera but usually south Jersey will see them in the frist week of April. The area around the old ambrose tower is a usual cross point for macks in the Ny bight and they usually show up around the 15h of April. Lasy season Macks were thick or never left in some areas because of the warm winter. This year will be hard to tell but bet your bottom dollar when the macks show up the blues will be right behind!

Togmaster knows his stuff. Mid April is when they should be in reach here. Do note that sometimes they hang around for a few weeks, other times they are only here for a few days. Keep monitoring the situation once the season nears, and as soon as the local party boats start finding them, act fast and go after them quickly. If not, you may miss them.

Surf Dweller, It depends on where you fish. I believe you live in eastern Long Island. Togmaster is right. We start catching mackerel last week of March or first week of April in Cape May, NJ depending on the water temperature. In mid April they show up off Belmar, NJ and migrate northeast. Spring mackerel are spawners. They are big, but they don't stay one area for a longtime unlike fall and winter fishing.
