I think they were at Ocean City - but headed South. Ocean temps have not budged in three weeks, and late week northeast winds will probably counter any of today and tomorrow's warming.

Last year we got them out of JI 4/16 - the water was 48 - 51 that day vs <41 today at FI buoy.

Boat and gear ready, trees and jigs ready, chest freezer cleaned out, kosher salt and zip locks restocked - come on already!

Blue,
We covered that in depth a couple of months ago. If you do a search you should find it. Personally, I wouldn't bother if the intent is shark bait, but if the intent is tuna bait, every little thing helps.

Mackeral

I bought another 400 lbs/ $.50lb to grind and 50 lbs/$1.00 for baits this morning. These fish came from Jersey. The price was a little high due to the last weeks weather. Got about 1000lb ground and 100lb of baits. Still have not gotten any huge squid. Available frozen in 25lb lots , but I like to package them in groups of 5 or so. Still looking.Boats in the shop for some TLC, then look out. Heading to Hatteras first of May to poke around. Mako's are pretty thick now down near Wrightsville Beach, NC. Buddy's a mate and keeps us posted. They will be around real soon in my area, Chincoteague, VA. Mark

How's Yer Chum, Chum?

Hey retreiver! have'nt seen you post in a while. I guess a Hot shot Capt. like you has plenty of rail meat hands to grind all that mack for you. If you wanna dress up your boat for the season, you should bring it to the sign shop right after she's out of the mechanics. your graphics and lettering look like Stevie Wonder is your gaff man!

It was a long boat ride to Seaside, NJ out of Jones Inlet yesterday(04-27). I found party boats including the Brooklyn VI and the Capt. Lou working just a few miles off Seaside Park. Fishing was very picky. Only one or two out of ten was female. There is no good report south of Seaside either. I assume big school takes offshore route to the north. I don't expect any good mackerel fishing in NY area even they show up.

The local area was off of Long Beach in 25' of water. It's only the begining I hope. The beach is loaded with bunker in 10-40' of water. The problem the gill netters are having is keeping the nets in the water long enough, without the bunker taking them for a ride. Also in the mix have been some slot size bass, but not many.
I'm not a big fan of gill-netters, but this time of the year this is where the best info about what's on the beach comes from.

Yesterday (4/30) was a red-letter day on the Shore as ocean fishing finally broke open with Capt. Willie Egerter Jr. reporting coolers full of mackerel five miles offshore, 20 miles south of Manasquan Inlet, on his Dauntless from Point Pleasant, while anglers fishing at the Cedars filled buckets with big flounders. Reported by Al Ristori.
