Hi Capt. What does the reccomended lure weight really mean? I do some diamond jigging in the fall but mostly bottom fishing, fluke, blackfish and seabass. Do lure weight and sinked weight coincide or is there a difference? If it rated 6oz lure can you fish 10 oz sinkers (just an example)? Thanks Lou

Hi,

Excellent question!!!!

I have asked this same question many ti es.

The best answer id that you can double the lure weight for sinkers.

What I do is hang sinkers off the tip of the rod until I find the weight that overloads the tip.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Capt. it has been on my mind for awhile. One more ? How do you determine the right lure weight? And what does it mean in relation to the rod? We sat together at the BASH and I'm picking your brain so I can explain to you how I want you to build my first custom rod Thanks, Lou

Hi Lou,

Usually the factory determines the lure weight and prints it on the completed rod or lists it in the blank catalog.

You can always attach the lures to the line, let about 5' of line out and bounce the tip up and down. You will be able to easily determine what will work for you.

Remember the fish you catch will be HUGE and you will still be able to reel it in.

I have recently repaired a BIG brand name factory rod that has quite a bend in the top area. Not the fault of the rod. The fisherman used 20 oz sinkers in well over 200' water. The rod was probably rated for 8 oz sinkers.

I will be ready when you are. Have many blanks for you to play with.

It Depends

The lure wieght is the the best wieght for the task you are trying to accomplish.

Do you want it to go far or be accurate or to get to your target, the fish as fast as possible.

It all depends on what you are doing with the rod.

THe whole kink is that the diameter of the rods parabellem is changing at a ver complex algorithum rate. Not only does the kinetic energy depend on the lure wieght but also on the line drag, the guide drag, the angle of intersection for line exiting the reel spool and the bigest factor is the person behind the rod.

What it all boils down to is does it feel good and do what you want? If so it most likly is good.

If someone has more time than I have here is the bricks and morter. Go develop a finite analysis and let us know how it works.

Call me when you figure it out,
Ill be fishing
