From a tackle shop's perspective, we can certainly tell you what's most popular among our Codfishing customers.

THE most popular reel we've been selling for that type of fishing is, with no doubt, the Saltist 50H. In addition, we're a Daiwa warranty repair center and we've seen VERY few problems with any of the Saltist's. They are put together like a tank... great reels!

The 300 size Newells are probably the second most popular although it seems to be the more "old school" fisherman who like the Newell reels. These are great reels too, I personally use the Newells but they do require a little more TLC than the Saltist's.

You can't go wrong with either of these, good luck in your search!

Newells!

I definately have to add my vote for Newells, I have both the 332 and 338, you can hold either one all day and barely feel it, which I think is a big plus when dealing with deep water, heavy sinkers or jigs, and many and/or large fish
.

I have heard many guys rave about the Penn Baja, which from what I understand, has been discontinued, but I'll bet you can find one easily.

i dont know what they are going for in the 08 market but i cant say enough of the mx by avet for codding have had cod in the mid 40s with no problem casts well good drag

They go for $209, the two speed is $319. I have an MXJ in the 2-speed, I really like the size and that wussy low gear is nice to have.

It's funny, I pooh poohed the little 2 speeds when they came out as a solution looking for a problem, but the more I use them, the more I like them.
