Looking to move up from my 18 1/2 ' walkaround to something that is big enough to go from Niantic Ct out to off of Block Island or Montauk tuna/shark grounds with 1 or 2 caynon runs per season, yet has the comforts so the boss (aka wife) will spend a few weekends on it.

Boats we are considering include (but not limited to)
1996 2870 Pursuit Walkaround twin 200hp yamahas
1997 2950 Proline twin 250hp mercruiser 5.7lx
2001 Wellcraft 297 Coastal twin 225hp yamahas
1998 29 Mako Sport Fisherman (293) Twin Merc EFI 250hp
1993 30' Luhrs Sport Fisherman 300 Tornament Twin 270hp Marine Power inboards
1996 2870 Pursuit Offshore twin 200hp yamahas
1996 Hydra Sport 3100SF (not sure of power)
1997 Pro Line 2810 Walkaround twin Johnson Ocean runner 225 hp
2000 30' Pro Line express Twin Merc o/b 2325hp
1996 Luhrs 290 Open Tournament 310hp Marine Power 350 EFI

Your opinions and comments regarding all (deadrise, ride, power, fuel etc etc etc)would be helpful
Thanks

mako vs wellcraft

I've owned both a mako and a wellcraft. the mako is constructed 10x better from the hull to the fittings. If the price is near the same then definately go with the mako..another great boat is the pursuit.

Same question already answered

Are you related to the member called "air1ck" or are you the same person? If you switch over to the Offshore Boards you'll see that we've given about four or five pages of advice on these boats. Air1ck has been asking details about each and we've been glad to help. Seems like a waste of energy to start the same discussion all over again.

Doc,
Funny... I don't remember seeing info on Luhrs, or Makos on those posts. The guy is looking for advice on some specific boats. If it is a waste of YOUR time to help him then don't respond. However, I am going to.

jrncpa,
Since the wife wants to be comfortable, I would suggest going with either the 29' Mako SF, or the Luhrs 30'SF. Those are the ones I am considering when I upgrade. I have a 230 coastal and I like the way it rides but it is the older heavier design. From what I hear the new ones are not as good. Good luck, and post some pictures when you get one.

Rodbuster,

You totally misunderstood my intentions. I never implied that anyone is wasting time. If you go back and read all the posts by air1ck and all of our replies, you will see that we have been very helpful. There are literally six or seven pages of advice given. His most recent post started with;

"I have 3 more boats that we are now looking at after the wellcraft turned out to be a notso good idea

Proline 2950 Walkaround:
1997
$69,900
10'10" Beam
220 Gallons of Fuel
2x250hp 5.7lx gas mercruisers
BravoIII Outdrives

Pursuit 2870 Walkaround:
1997
$69,999
9'6" Beam
Twin 200hp Yamaha Saltwater Outboards
235 gallons of fuel

30' Proline Express:
2000
$99,900
10'10" Beam
312 Gallons of Fuel
Twin Mecury 225hp Optimax

The boat will be used for offshore/inshore fishing. Please be honest even if you think its total junk. If you need anymore information, just ask. Thanks Guys."

I was wondering if air1ck felt like he had to switch screen names for some unknown reason. Our advice continues to flow in those other conversations and we are all wishing him/her the best. We are also curious of the outcome. To start the same exact conversations all over again doesn't seem very productive for him/her.

Deadrise, Power, etc.

Now these are just my humble opinions based on my own experience. I don't see most of the boats mentioned as truly Canyon ready boats. Sure you can pick a window in July and August and get out to the the place and maybe do a little overnighter. But in reality if you get caught it ain't gonna be pretty. 2 ways to go as far as I'm concerned deeeeep V Bertram/Hunt style boat, or a commercial lobster style that you can slow down in some crappy seas and still make headway. Remember some of the best tuna fishing will be in Sept/Oct. The NW wind that comes with the change in seasons will be 6-8 seas 25 miles out, and eventually you'll want to come home.

I own a Proline 2950MC w/ 2- 225 Evinrude Ocean Pro OBs,all bought new in 94.I have had some engine troubles, but the boat itself is pretty damned good.No wasted space.Boat handles well in every situation I've been thru up to 8 fters. My only complaintis the engines drinking habits.I guesstimate that I get between 2/3 -3/4 mile per gallon.I originally purchased this boat with intentions of hitting the canyon, but not enough range.I'm, based in Jamaica Bay,80 miles, one way.
I see the one you are looking at has inboards,I don't know what they drink, but I do know that has less fuel capacity.I hold 300 gal,I need 400.If I try the canyon now ,I would be coming home on fumes if I make it back.
Hope this helps.
Pete
