I have a 18 ft boston whaler that I like to go around bay fishing and plugging with. I was wondering if I could get some advise on where I can find a 90- 115 h.p. outboard for the boat. New or used. Thanks for the help.

Dealer/Service

Big Rick-
IMO the Customer Service and followup after the sale are what is important.

Where are you located?

We might be able to recommend several dealers based on your location.

My personal suggestion for a motor would be a Suzuki DF 115 or even a DF 140.

Suzuki is THE largest manufacturers of outboard motors in the WORLD. Probably the most underrated and undersold! Plus they are literally thousands of dollars less than than an equivalent Yamaha.

Big Rick...with that size boat, you can get by with a 90hp but the 115hp would be a better choice, depending on how much speed you want, and your budget...you might get a little sticker shock when you see the price of a 115 nowadays. And i would consider a Suzuki since they make a excellent engine for the price.

the 18 foot outrage? We have a 150hp yamaha (max power) and it runs really well. We've taken it up to 12-15 miles off the beach. If you are talking about the Montauk, thats a different story in the power category.

Look at them all...

Big Rick,

EC Newell is right about sticker shock. Nothing comes cheap anymore!

I would suggest you call or go to JENSEN MARINE SERVICE on Merrick Road in Copiague. He carries and is an authorized dealer/repair center for Suzuki, Yamaha and Honda.

A 115 hp sounds like it should handle your boat, but I don't know your fishing/crusing habits nor what a typical load would be for you. As long as you don't exceed the HP rating for your boat, decide what YOU want and can afford. The 4 stoke engines being produced right now by the 3 companies I mentioned are all great engines.

I have twin Suzuki DF 140's and think they are awesome. Not a single problem all year so far and I have over 250 hours on them. The Yamahas are also great. My nephew bought twin 115's this year, and although he has had issues with valve timing and timing belts, they have been good to him. The Hondas might not be the best suited for your boat, because they are much heavier engines than the Suzukis or Yammies. There have been reports of corrosion problems as well.

A Suzuki DF 115 rigged with controls and gauges will run somewhere about $9K. The Yammahas will be a FEW thousand more. I don't know what the Hondas go for.

You might want to do your "window shopping" now and when the boat show season rolls around (January) look to purchase what you want. It is my understanding that Suzuki is going to offer the 6 year warranty, again, for the shows.

Hope this helps!
