Over the past few months I have seen several topics about fishing clubs. A Smithtown club, Moriches club, and just people looking for a club. nobody follows through with them. Weather through lack of interest or lack of resorces I don't know. Maybe we're going about it wrong! everybody has been trying to set up clubs for a specific area. What if we tryed to set up a club that would not be confined by one area but would cover all Long Island. If we could get the asstance of Noreast magazine/website I think it is possable. If they would be willing to take up the challange. I would like to here some other opinions on this

but it is possible

This may sound a little extreme, but you can have different chapters or groups all on the same page with each other. there can be an appointed individual or two from each chapter as a head or leader. These people can meet and confer with each other and then relay suggestions or info to each group. Sounds a little complicated and doesnt have to be exactly the same but something can be done along those lines.

I hear what you are saying but there are already over a hundred active fishing clubs in the Tri-State area. These are some of the more local ones. As you can see, the last thing we need is another club. My original suggestion was to fill a void geographically.

Hey Doc I freely admit that I didn't know there were so many clubs around, but let me ask you this how many of these have open membership to anyone who wants to be a part of it. Most of the clubs I know about in order to get in you have to know someone, be related to someone, be voted in, or you sit on a waiting list untill they have an opening for a new member. whitch means someone has either moved to florida or died.

I'm tired of that! I'm looking for a club with an open membership to anyone all the time it doesn't have to be the whole Island I admit that's a bit extream. I just want a club where good people can have a good time and share some good fishing. maybe organize a few contests or some cod trips in the winter when all of us are feeling the winter blues and staring at the boat wraped up in the back yard

You'll still run into all of the problems I ran into when I was looking into starting a Smithtown Bay fishing club except they will be on an even larger scale.

For starters, our population on the island is just to diverse. Too many people have too many opposing views on what a club should be about, who should be allowed to join, etc...

The second problem is liability. Nobody wants to be responsible for the actions of others (and I can't blame them). With a current LI fishing club on the receiving end of a lawsuit, it's understandable that people and sponsors will be hesitant.

The third problem was leadership. You'll find that only a very small percentage of those interested will be willing to volunteer their time. Finding leadership for individual chapters around the island will be tough.

Fourth, a common meeting place was an issue. We couldn't find one decent location here in one town for free. Finding locations all around the Island will be a challenge.

I can go on and on but I think you get the idea that this is something I and a few others spent a considerable amount of time researching. Yes it is true that many of our clubs are private and restrict their membership. However, if you post the locations where you fish I'll be glad to point you in the right direction to clubs that will take you in.

Let me know.

Doctor fish hit the nail on the head. I have been a long time member of several clubs, both fraternal and service and the biggest problem we have is membership growth and retention. People just dont want to volunteer their time anymore.
