I constructed a livewell a couple of days ago that I plan to strap to my swim platform. I'd like to run the inlet off of the washdown pump instead of adding another pump. The question is...If the washdown pump is running contiuously, wont that put a strain on the batts? And wont it be kinda noisy? Did I just answer my own question? I need to plumb another pump dont I?

I have my livewell running off the same pump as my washdown. You do not need to leave the pump on continously. I will go out fishing the whole day and maybe every 20-30minutes I will turn on the pump for 5 minutes depending on what type of bait I have in the livewell and how crowded it is in there. If I have killies in the livewell I only turn it on for 5 or 10 minutes every hour. If I have fresh caught spearing or snappers I turn it on every 15 or 20 minutes. The noise is not a problem and will only drive you nuts if you leave it on continously. BTW I like that livewell, I might make a bigger one for blues and bunker. Make sure there is a screen over the drain.

Thanks guys. I dont think turning it on intermittently will work because I plan to mainly keep Adult bunker in there. In my expeirience, they need a pretty constant flow to stay healthy. As for a screen...
...Already got that covered. A drain that size is like a water slide for small baits lol!

In-water Powerhead

Hi there, nice job, looking drum.
You're right about the noise. I switched over to a 300 gal.powerhead that they used in saltwater aquarium. I also converted the 12 volt to 120 volt to run the pump.
The advantage of using powerhead because they're basically no noise and low power assumption.
BTW, the powerhead came with prefilter works the best at the intake and need a narrow nozzle about half of a inch. Good luck.

I have a live well question that is slightly off topic. I'm thinking of painting the inside of my live well blue. Has anyone done this and what kind of paint did you use? My well is fiberglass and gelcote.

A live well pump and a wash down pump are created for different purposes. live well pumps are made to pump hi volume at low pressure
.........wash down pump is made to build pressure so it doesn't produce as much volume

also, as you said, a wash down pump will use more power, especially if you run it constant. And if you are running it constantly a live well pump is cheaper and easier to replace.

Last season I put in a wash down pump and live well, I too was toying around with using the wash-down pump for both (I have a much smaller live well) I then came to the conclusion that a live-well pump cost like $10 more than the Y valve, It just didn't make sense.

Lastly, And I think most important, That's a big freaking live well. If you don't have a decent pump it is going to take for ever for that thing to fill up. you'll end up playing the bucket game again.

You know what you have to do ;).........

Oh Yeah!!!!!!! Don't hold out on were you got the barrel man

The spare livewell pump I have laying around just happens to be 3800 gph so I think I should be more than ok lol. Thats why I went with the big drain.

As far as barrels ar concerned, I have 2 more if anyone is interested, One is brand new and has not had the top cut off yet and the other is used and cut with a 1 1/2" drain hose attached. The used one is water tight. Pm me if interested.

Both are blue by the way. I also have a white one that is used and already plumbed with thru-hulls.

A friend of mine made a similar baitwell like yours.
What he did was used a Rule Bilge Pump that he would just drop over the side when he was stopped or anchored.

When he was under way, he had some 1 1/2 PVC pipe on a bracket that extended down to just below the hull (like a transducer). It had a bologna slice facing forward so that while underway, it forced water into the baitwell.

Was pretty cool too...........when ya took it out of the barrell............it would shoot up one **** of a rooster tail................LOL

I snapped a picture of it for ya..................

Livewell...

Bluefish9...

The fill for the tank is where?on the bottom or at mid level on tank and is it shooting straight into the tank or did you put a 90 Deg. elbow on the inside of tank. If keeping Adult bunker alive I would consider it, Just adds a circular motion to the water flow and the bunker will swim against it staying alive a little longer! I noticed it from personal experience.

On my livewell I have a Shurflo Baitmaster Pump, 5 GPM output going to a 30 gal tank, Works extremely well and I've had a 30 to 50 piece count in tank at once with no die off...I do leave it running all day (only when filled with bait) as well as my engine..never shut it doun so there is really no battery drain. Maybe that's why I can't tell if the pump is loud...Just can't hear it over the engine..

Just trying to help...Looks awesome by the way!!! Good Luck with it!!!

livewell tank

Home depot sells sump pump wells, the small size is perfect for about a 25 gall live well, and they sell for less than $20. The smaller one doesn't have any holes in it so you can plum them with pvc any way you wish . There is a flange around the top so its easy to make a hinged top out of starboard. just replace the steel T nuts with stainless.

The inlet is at a 90 degree angle at the bottom. I also just added a spray inlet at the top as well for some air. I plan on having the engine off so Noise is a concern. Thanks so much for the feedback! (and the compliments;))

Livewell

That looks like it could be a 55 gallon tank. At 8 pounds per gallon that is 440 pounds. Will the swim platform hold that kind of weight while you are running?

live well

check out http://www.livebaitlarry.com/transom_pump.asp

there's a rule pump that you could snap in and snap out. When you're underway, the slanted bracket acts like a fast water pickup and still keeps the well circulating with water.

Andy, the well is a 30 gal. The platform can hold that and plenty more though.

Postcall, I thought about going that route. Sure would make for much easier wiring instead of snaking wire up my gunnel into the dash and spare switch. What are they a$king for those transom mount pumps these days?
