I was in an oriental fish market yesterday and saw what was marketed as wild, U.S. caught striped bass fillets. They were all about 12 inch fillets. I have seen inland hybrids in freshwater in the rivers of the midwest, sometimes called white bass by the locals. They looked very much like our salt water stripers. I'm hoping this is what I saw there. Anyone ever run across this before? I'll ask him next time if they are fresh or saltwater stripers.

Have to ask where they came from...

Chesapeake commerical limits are like 18" IIRC... They can really take small fish down there.

So if they say Maryland, it's legit. If they say anywhere else, it's farmed or illegal.

Maryland's commercial Striped Bass harvest time went out the end of Feb and won't come back in until June 15th. So they didn't come from Maryland.

Most probably they were either farm raised stripe bass or striper/white bass hybbrids. Either way they were most likely not "wild caught."

Mike is 100% correct. Fulton Fish market is full of this stuff all year. It is portion controlled and available in steady supply, just what mongers want.

"SUNSHINE BASS"

OK folks, here's the deal....these are not illegal striped bass or anything like that...these are what we in the retail business refer
to as sunshine bass, which is a farm raised hybrid of a striped bass and a white bass, exactly what MakoMike said.

I don't eat fish but love to fish. My family loves to eat fish and do like striped bass. Does anyone know how these fish taste compared to fresh stripers? I get skunked enough and prefer catch and release. If these taste the same or close I wouldn't have to fillet another striper.

Don't put the fillet knife away...

Farmed stripers are vastly inferior on the plate to the real deal, IMHO...

A novel Idea

I prefer wild
But heres a new Idea

1 go to fish store
2 Buy hybrid Bass
3 prepare and eat
4 form own opinion

Its not as bad as some make it out to be and many actually prefer it
It really suits the american palate
as do talapia , bassa and the like.

Its definatly a form your own opinion type deal
