I'm not entirely suprised. I've seen butterfly fish and angel fish on the inshore wrecks in the summer. But I would have thought our local waters were still too cool for it.

While lionfish are dangerous, they aren't as bad as stonefish. You can easily see a lionfish and they usually hang around rocks and reefs. A stonefish, unless you know what you're looking for, you don't see until it's too late. :(

Tropicals...

My brother got stung by a lionfish in an aquarium. Intense pain slowly traveled up his arm to his shoulder. The doc said if it started to cross into the chest area, to go to the ER ASAP.

A co-worker is already catching tropicals by the old OBI in GSB. We usually get a lot of butterflys and angelfish, damsels, even seahorses. I think Lionfish are not too common. Last Feb., I dove Catalina Island in Cal. Found butterflyfish in 50 something degree water. Go figure!

My neighbor stepped on something at Riis Park last Sunday, and got blood poisoning REAL FAST. He is still in the hospital.

Does anyone remember about 6 years ago, the invasion of Spanish Mackeral in Jamaica Bay? Along with them came huge schools of about 3 different kinds of Jacks - all small, one type was grey, another green and yellow. At the same time there were lots of triggerfish being caught.

So far they got some filefish and spiney puffers, all juvinals. Just to be clear, these tropicals are caught with a hand net while snorkling/diving. (not fishing...) They did get a 1 inch lionfish last year at Shinne****. (Died in tank.)

I hope no one catches a lionfish and mistakes it for a funky sea robin. Even with a towel, you are gonna be in pain. Cut the line. Might be better to kill these lionfish as they belong in the Pacific - Not the Atlantic.

These friends go almost every weekend; I try to keep you updated as to what is flowing in. Better selection out at the bridge in Shinn.

MOCEAN, I would appreciate you keeping me posted, I teach a marine science class for children. I'm not a biologist or anything I just do it for fun. I usually net fish for our class tanks and would be interested in telling the children what type of tropicals may end up off of our waters. Thanks a lot.

Johnny B,

I've got a location in GSB where Sea Horses can be caught at will from June to September. they aren't tropical, but are actually a Northern species. PM if you want more info. Your class might want to take a field trip if it's allowed.

seahorse

Do you guys mean the bright funky yellow seahorses? I thought they were from out of town??? Seen them in Cozumel. Just assumed I guess.

Johnny, I'll keep you updated. Expect juvinile french and queen angels, spotted butterflys... good aquarium stuff!

aquarium fish

johnnyb, exact location is unnecessary.
find them in eelgrass and around submerged rocks and docks, in the vicinity of any south shore inlet. i have caught over 135 different species of fish in long island waters and kept most of them in aquariums for days to years at a time. like any other fishing, put your time in and you will catch them. send me a private message if you need help with a fish id or life support advice.

I've seen pipefish while diving on the North shore.

Several years ago a diving friend swore he saw sea snake out in Greenport. I thought they were mistaken until last year when I too saw a sea snake in that area (I've seen many sea snakes in warmer waters to be sure of what I saw).
