Just wondering if you leave line on over the winter or change it every year. Do you do the same thing for spinning and conventional reels?

StanLee, my offshoe big game stuff gets changed every year. The rest of the stuff, it all depends on how much use it gets, some of my setups I change the line several times a season, others, if they don't see much action, the line stays for another season. Store in a dark place, light can deteriorate monofilament, and they will sleep better over the winter months.

I agree with MakoMutt. I change my line on the light stuff on a need to basis. The line on my big guns gets changed every season. It may not need it, but I change it anyway. I can't afford to lose a big fish because of a nick in the line I didn't know was there. You just don't hook that many big fish anymore. I take off about 80% of the old line and attatch the new line via a blood knot. We have caught a lot of big fish and I have never seen the blood knot while fighting a fish. I have about a dozen big guns to spool every year, so I save a little money by doing it this way. It also helps if you use quality line. This is not the area you want to be cheap.

It depends, I change the line on my big
reels several times during the season.If
the last change out is at the end of the
season I will start next season with that spool of line,I have never had a
problem doing it this way,but you have go with what you feel comfortable with.

I like the idea of the Rods sleeping for winter. Very funny. Maybe I will get some blankets for em.

To Mike84 I do have covers for my offshore rods and reels,great protection
during the runs to and from the canyons.
Also helps them sleep better during the winter.Keep on Catching.
