Anyone ever tried it? I'm thinking of giving it a shot over the summer, using a newell 220 matched to a "lep stick" with 12 lb power pro.

There are a few guys out there that have done some light tackle trophy codfishing. Danny Angerman, Bob Wirthe and Jim Mallia, they have all caught cod over 40 lbs on line as light as 6 lb test on party boats. When the conditions are right with a light load, why not?
Just don't do it with a full crew on a windy day with a screaming tide. I don't think it would be much fun in deep water either.

I think 6'3" is to short for light tackle cod fishing. You need a longer limber rod and VERY sharp hooks. You will probably only be using 6 or 8 oz jigs. Those guys back in the day were nuts.
