Let's Talk Fluke Teasers

Quite a few Noreasters have been getting the jump on the coming season by P.M.ing and e-mailing me asking about my B/S rig and the teasers that I like to use on it above the sinker.

I think that this would be a good time to illustrate a few patterns that have worked for us on the Lep over the past two seasons.

I also believe this would be a good time because of the proximity of the Freeport Show, at which one of the best if not THE best teaser creator I know of will be exhibiting and selling his products. I'm talking about our own Tom/"Reelteasers." You can catch him sharing a booth with the good Capt. Neil and Al "Rodprof" Goldberg. That booth will therefore have 3 of the nicest guys you will ever meet in attendence, there to answer your questions, show their wares and maybe even make a sale or two.

Anyways, here in no particular order are a few patterns that I consider "Must Haves" when I go for the flat ones:

First up is the "Squid Fly." This one works well mid-Summer when we see those tiny blue and white scratches on the fish finder scattered just over the bottom. I like it with a small piece of fish-bait on it - I prefer a tiny spearing - maybe 2" long max:

Hi Sam,

I'll be at the Freeport show tomorrow.

Have the mantis shrimp ready to show you. I know you like your flies over-sized.

Hope to see you.

Harvey
Thanks to all my friends at Noreast for stopping by and purchasing my teasers.

All the money goes to my favorite pastime, fishing with my sons.

Frank,

Glad to see you put the teasers to good use.

I agree with SeaOx, and tie my dropper loops on the small size.

I find that large dropper loops have a tendency of wrapping around the main line when using long strip bait.
Bucktails are designed to push water.

The 15.5lb fluke caught on the Nancy Ann a few weeks ago was caught on a bucktail sent down to catch a bass.

I've fished with Capt Rich many times over the last ten years. Those bucktails are not thin.

It's late in the season and fluke will be feeding on larger bait fish. I would use it as is.

Attach a nice strip of fluke belly and send it down.

Go get em.
Hi Lep,

I managed to get a digital picture of the Teaser-Fly. Capt Neil came to the rescue.

It will be waiting for you at the show.

See you there,
Harvey

I've also been working on a rainbait/sand eel pattern. Once the show is over I'll be able to concentrate my effort on them. The beauty of this fly is light passes thru the body.

I also have a bunch of new teasers ready for the show. Sorry I don't have pictures to upload, but the teasers will be worth the wait.

Hope to see everyone there.

I can supersize this white and red head teaser for you. Gave Sam843 a supersized one last season. He used it to set a fluke record in MA. I believe he caught 5 fish over 10lbs with it.

Will also have a new teaser at the show with the top wing in light blue/green. I had the bucktails dyed to my secret colors. This teaser is going to slam the fish.

Hi Lep,

Will also have a peanut bunker pattern that I had a few of the Noreast guys test for me last summer. The results were very good.

Sorry I don't have a picture of the teaser, but I do have one of the results. Frank from Noreast went fishing with his brother and 2 friends in Brezzy Point.

I'd like to thank all my friends from Noreast that stopped by the booth this weekend.

All the monies collected go to good use. Fishing with my sons.

Thanks again, and hope to see everyone on the water this season.
Hi Pete,

I should have the pictures ready to post by Friday. Thanks for the kind words about my fluke teasers.

Here's the picture of Sam with his doormat fluke. The teaser I tyed for Sam was a much larger profile than the one in the picture. The teaser was tyed on a 8/0 straight eye Gamakatsu hook. The bucktail was 5+ inches long.

Sam decided to go fluking while the rest of the boat was catching porgies. He ended the day with 2 - 2 lbs, 2 - 3 lbs, 1 - 6 lb, 1 - 7 lb, and last but not least an 11.2 lb doormat.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the show.

Harvey

I had to post the teaser separately. The two pictures together must exceed the maximum space allowed.

Hi Ba21,

I like the top one. Try using pearl estaz instead of the yellow material.
