thanks...

Hi, a new member here- been reading (and really enjoying) the board.

Just wanted to thank all contributors. Especially this post (quick and Lep).

I'm someone who appreciates quality but also appreciates value. The BPS rod mentioned above sounded/looked too good to be true. I ended up ordering three graphite rods from BPS w/quality guides, graphite seats and cork grips.

The muskie rod quick/Lep mentioned above is still on sale for $25 (incld shipping), second rod 8-17#, for bucktailing fluke ($30 w/shipping), third rod 10-20# - backup to my med app rod, ocean porgy, c-bass, fluke, etc... ($25 w/shipping). Don't know exactly after s&h/taxes, but total was about $83. $83 BUCKS!!!

I haven't fished all my life as some of you, but I think all will say these are UNBELIEVEABLE prices and I just wanted to thank the contributors.

PS: Anyone with thoughts on what "value" reels I can match the above rods with? I am looking to spend $50 - $75 per reel.

Thanks again to quick and Lep!

Glad you like the rods. Wish I could go into biz building rods that good for $20, but I think that would be a quick-ending venture for sure. Probably go out of business with a mailbox full of orders, if you gt my drift.

As far as "Value-priced" reels to match those rods - try the Daiwa Firewolf model #17 for the light sticks and the 27 and/or 47 for the bigger rod.

Around $50-60 each and appear to be worth it.

I just ordered several of those muskie rods myself, based on Leps rave reviews.
Eh, for 20 bucks each, I figure if they're so bad I'll make a laundry rack
out of them. Thanks for the tip Mr. Lep, I think basspro owes you a commission.

Waver - HAAA! ! ! - You're SOOO Right!

And not only Bass Pro shops.

I can't tell you how many Good Windlasses, Cape Fear Rods, Newell reels Ratheon Radars,Sitex fishfinders and Shamrock and Seaworthy/BHM boats I've sold for those companies.

At least Good throws me NY Boat Show tickets every Jan.

I'm a commissioned salesman by choice and trade, but ain't a dime acomin' from any of those people.

But that's O.K., better I recommend quality stuff to guys that have the need than having somebody go out there with second-string equipment.

Don't worry, you will love those rods, especially with a Hog Tog trying to go in the other direction.

Hi,

Based on your test analysis and good words I just ordered 4 of those BPS $20 rods! I just had to see them and at that price.

I will use them as donation rods. I can not buy the components for that price. I might add a wrap or something to add to the look if needed.

Worse case I can sell them at the Flea Market.

They do charge $5 PER ROD PLUS SHIPPING!

Here is the info gals and guys.

On sale now for $19.95 plus $5 plus shipping.

Thanks for the great info Lep. I just ordered two myself....can't believe the price. Funny thing is I just purchased the AVET SX (15-20) reel from charkbait.com for $155(including shipping) last week and was looking for a new rod. Looks like I got a great combo.

Thanks again

The problem with these "B"-grade reels isn't always that they aren't worth the money. In many cases they are. But a few seasons from now when the levelwind pawl is shot or the soft-metal pinion needs replacing - you frequently cannot get the parts. The importing company no longer has the deal in place with the Korean, Chinese or Malaysian exporter and there goes your reel into the trash.

I looked at those Shakespeare Tidewaters at the Suffern Show. In fact I looked quite hard at the cut-away model they had over on the left of the Shakespeare booth. Not too bad, looked pretty good actually.

But they all gave me the impression of being needlessly overweight and ungainy large, especially the levelwinds. I think your interests would be better served with something in the Firewolf line from Daiwa.

I looked hard at those too. Not to shabby at all, in fact they seemed to be quite a good buy for the bucks. Seem like the purrrfect match to "My" pet rods. Low cost and built by a major company - in fact just introduced - so they should be around for a while.

That would be where I'd be looking if it were I in that segment of the reel market.

Actually and truth be told, I don't buy any reels as "New" anymore. I hit e-Bay once I've identified a need in my arsenal and have gotten some really striking deals on reels like high-end Abu's (Black Max and Pro Max series) some excellent Newells and a cherry Penn 940, which I shot a power handle from a 965 on (What an engineering job that was!)I've yet to get burned on e-Bay, you just have to know what your targetted reel is worth before going in and you can't let yourself get carried away.

So those are my thoughts.

But in the long run, you are right, you most certainly get what you pay for. Especially in reels.
