A "car top" permit is required from the Smithtown Town Clerk's Office. It is for residents only. However, at the stoplight right before the bluff (intersection of Old Dock Road and St. Johnland Rd) you can make a right turn and about 1/8th of a mile (right after you climb the hill) you will see the Nissequogue River State Park entrance on your left hand side. It has a brand new canoe/yak launch ramp with special stairs that make it easier to launch.

At this State Park Ramp there is a sign which clearly states that you should only plan to launch and re-treive your Kayak at High tide or a few hours before and after. Makes it appear that there might not be enough water in the area for your return. Never launched there so dont really know. Although the steps are there, and also a nice little angled chute for your Kayak, it isnt simply a beach type of loading area. Slippery so be careful

The State ramp on the west side of the river is a nice site but it can be a real stinker at low tide. I made the mistake one evening and had to get out of the yak and walk in mud half way up to my knees. Talk about stink!:( If you have an Empire pass you don't pay for parking otherwise it's $5. here is a sandbar out side in the Sound. If there is an outgoing tide and high water give it some room. I love it there.

The Stink...

Diamondwrapper,

I've got worse news for you. The entire river has been closed to shellfishing for decades because for many years while the hospital was operating, it dumped its sewer waste right into the river. Considering that the area where they built that boat ramp has been closed to the public for all those years too, it's not unlikely that you were the first to walk through something a little more spicy than plain old mud...
