About 3 months ago I found this site and posted a similar question. Since then I have learned alot and enjoyed reading about the fishing in my old 'hood (south shore Long Island). In a week I will be with family at the Seacrest near Hither Hills. I am bringing my 10' rod, waders, headlamp, and assorted lures based on what I have gathered thru this site and other sources: Long A Bomber, Red Fin, Bucktails/pork rind, Gibbs Darter and Pencil Popper, YoZuri Crystal Minnow, tin.

Now I am loking for last minute sage advice... I will have access to a car (no 4WD), I do not have a state parking permit so I am assuming I will be doing some walking. I plan to augment my tackle at the local shops (Freddies, others??). I can drive to where the bite is but also hope there may be some stripers swimming the beach out front at night willing to take a live eel or clam. I also hope to hook up my nephews (eight and ten years old). I plan to bring a 8 1/2 foot spinner for them and could use some advice where they might catch and what, from a safe shore location (e.g., the Harbor jettys.

Any advice gladly accepted, and if any of you are fishing Montauk August 30 through September 2 and would like some company, give me a holler.

Jim

Last Minute Advice

Don't bring the kids Surf Casting until you are comfortable with the layout. Take them Porgy, Sea Bass or Flat fishing on a charter. The Montauk surf scene is at best only for kids in the daytime. August in Montauk is best for night time Bass fishing and is no place for a kid unless they and you have a lot of patience.

Sounds like you have it all covered except for the sand worms off the sand beaches. Deadly for bass and weakfish.
Try Johneys for the worms. Freddies dosn`t always carry them. Like the man said fish the sand beaches early in the A.M. or @ night. It dosn`t hurt to throw out some worms in the daytime if you are hanging out @ the beach anyway.
Good luck.

if you go to gin beach you can fish the tip of the jetty for fluke and have a shot at some albies. i have actually limited out there a few times. just watch the parking because they ticket you until after labor day.

All the previous advice for the suds was good. However if your looking just to get the kids some action. Try the pier at the end of Navy Road. It's long and leads out into the Sound.

It's easy fishing and there are tons of porgies. Which will take worm or clam. The kids will have a ball.
