Cap,

I recently purchased a gsb132m lami blank. I am installing 5 guides not including the tip. I have made rods before and my bible does not have the spacing for that rod. I am going to do the math and play with the spacing on the rod to get an idea of where to put them. I was wondering what your sugestions for spacing would be on this specific blank. Reel will most likley bey a 706z bailess. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Gottafly,

I have no cooky cutter measurements for you. On a blank like that, I start with the top guide 5" below the tip top.

I static deflect the blank to set the rest of the guides and test cast to set the guide above the reel.

For a spin rod I flex the blank in a back cast position and space the guides so that the line does not hit the blank.
The guides are facing the ceiling when I do this.

I cut pieces of different sizes of surgical tubing to hold the guides temporarily in place. Slide them down the blank before installing the tip top. Cut the tubing off with a razor as you wrap the guide in place. This makes it easy to hold the guides in place and also reposition the guides when aligning the guides.

I set the guide above the reel by test casting a 1 oz sinker. I watch how the line travels, does it hit the blank or jam into the guide. Each of these will limit the casting distance. You are looking for a smooth transition from the reel thru the 1st guide.

If you would like to stop by the shop with the blank and guides I would be very happy to set the guides up with you. Just call in advance, (631) 567-8049.
