Well this is a topic on the all around rod of our time. If there is one rod that stands out it has to be the Lamiglass MB-114-3f. This rod has been around for many years and I am sure every sharpie has a bunch of them in there arsenal? I cannot tell you guys that do not own one to go have one built! The rod is a great all around rod which can be used from jigging tuna to stripers to my favorite Tog! The beauty of this rod is the power it has in the back bone while still have a sensitive tip. The inshore tip size I fish with is an 11 tip which can hold a 12 to about a 14 oz. sinker with out a problem. I also use an 8 to 10 tip for fluke. The rod length is usually 7? 4? give or take a little on the size of the tip you like or need. Try and have the tip cut to the fishing you will be doing or sinker max you?ll need? Go with the sig guides yes there more money but they last on the braids better then any of the other materials. I have some old stainless guides on many of my rods and will tell you that I find the stain less the most sensitive for Tog fishing. This is a debate between many rod experts but it is my opinion here in this post. The only problem with stainless is they corrode faster and certain braids can cut them! I also find that I have to cut the rear of the rod to swing it past my stomach .This is only done while tog fishing I set the hook holding the rod pointed out like a gun and switch after the hook is set. I did find the butt catching my skins so I trimmed like 2? off the butt which is not always necessary depending on your arm length and size? For Chunking the rod is a power house. A 12 tip in current is what I prefer but the 11 will do fine. Sea bass fishing it is great with a 12 to 13 tip for deep 60 ft. to 200 ft depths. This is what we used last week when Sea bass fishing out east and pulled many triple header 3 to 4 lbs. in with a great bend in the rod but had the power. Now I know everyone has there own preference but believe me this rod was and is still used by most of my fellow pin hookers and many swear by it! So you won?t make the wrong choice trying or having one made. I don?t believe they make the blank already made they only sell it in an unwrapped blank? I may be wrong but I sure guys will be looking to prove me wrong!lol . So if you need a good winter project or want a new rod for the spring, Or have to get it a.s.a.p then look into it right away. Also use a good reel seat and a good reel. A 200 to 300 series Newell or a jig master, abu 6500c, are good matches for the rod. I prefer the lighter reels being the newer blanks are lighter in weight compared to some of the older 114?s I have. Hope I get some guys who write back about the rod if they have it made from this post? I would love to hear your reviews on the rod! Ec + I will do a post on the history off the 114 when we get a chance? Go get them the fall bite is on! Oh you didn?t know?:)

Hi Capt Mike,

Thanks for another great info page to put in my book of rod blank articles.

I loved the pictures especially the rod with the sidewinder. On several occasions I have had fishermen on board using a fiberglas rod with a side winder for blacks. They caught the most fish and worked the hardest. Many other fares complained it was not a great trip because their coolers were not as full. Some of these were using lite spin rods and would not change to a boat rod.

Today I am in the hunt to purchase a MB 114 3F. I will make it up asap and use it this fall when I go for blacks. It will also be a demo rod for folks to try.

Once again, thabnk you,

Capt Neil

aaah the MB 114 3F, this has to be the most versitile blank Lami has made. Starting at 9'6" this rod can be cut from the tip and butt to make a staggering amount of finished rods to cover every application in this area. For those of us pinhookers who fished out of Sheepshead bay this rod cut to various tip sizes was just about all you needed. I have built many of these rods over the years in tip sizes 10 through 16. I personally own them in the following sizes: 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and one set with an un-cut tip and trimmed to nine feet from the butt. Now that i use Power pro, the rods i originally built have taken on different applications so i will list what i use them for with power pro and what i orinally used them for, for those of you who fish mono. Let me first say that the reason i have these in size 11 through 15 is because when i did fish mono these different tip size made a difference depending on conditions and water depth. Since i started to use the power pro i only have been using sizes 11, 12 and 15. but here is the run down of the rods and how i used them:

11 Tip 7'8"
Great inshore rod up to 65' depths with power pro line.

12 tip 7'8"
Mid water depths or stronger current conditions. Bunker chunking bass and blues, in my opinion they best chunk fishing stick.

13 Tip 7'8"
Originally used this rod from the rockaway reef to 100' depths when fishing MONO, have not used this with power pro yet but i am sure i would be a great deep water tog rod or winter sea bass rod.

14 Tip 7'8"
This Rod excelled at 17 and the farms for tog with MONO line, i dont think there is a better rod for this application. I recently used this as an inshore COD rod in montauk and Coxes ledge with #50 Power pro and it was great.

15 Tip 8'0"
I havn't built one of these in two years so if anyone tries please be sure to measure the rod before you make any cuts because this blank has changed a little and cutting it to a 15 tip may give you less than 8 for of blank. If you want the rod shorter than 8 foot you will be fine. This makes a great cod rod with MONO line in the Freeport 20 mile wrecks area and also coxes. I have personally used this rod with #65 power pro up in Mass. in depths of up to 300' with great success while bait fishing only. This is not a rod for deep water cod jigging (another thread?)

Original Tip cut back to 9' from the butt. Built this way it makes a great rod for Trolling bunker spoons and large plugs. the light tip section is just what you need to bring those spoons to life.

well there you have it the MB 114 3F build one today you won't regret it.

Togmaster and Rodwinder,

You fellows have refined these rods to the "enth degree" because they were the tool of your trade.

Have either of you played with the new composite blanks? This I ask as a rod builder who likes to build on the best blank available for a task and am ever on the lookout to improve my knowledge and understanding of our craft. Yes, I am a fisherman BUT have nowheres near the experience that a full time fisherman would have.

I like fishing with some of the composites. I also prefer to build on them because they hold up better in a fishermans hands than graphite, especially when they use braided lines.

I think there are many oldies BUT goodies still out there and I think there is a top shelf place for them today.

Thanks as always,

Capt Neil

THIS IS THE BLUEPRINT FOR LAMIGLASSES MOST FLEXIBLE ROD>>>

Rodwinder, thanks for the very detailed measurements on the MB1143F. Like Rodwinder stated, this blank was the de-facto standard in the NY BIGHT, from blackfish, to striped bass to bluefish, to codfish, and even seabass. Many of the regular bluefish pinhookers would go as far as cutting this blank back to a 16 tip and sometimes add a extension if they wanted a little more length. This was ment for lifting bluefish over the rail on the party boats. Lamiglass also made a handful of these blanks in CHESTNUT (old LTD series), and in S glass. These are very rare blanks indeed!

One thing which made the MB1143F so popular is that no matter what tip size it was cut back to, it fished as well as any other blank...it had both the sensitvity and power, that few other blanks had. Along with the MB841E, and MB963M, the MB1143F completed the set of blanks that you needed to fish with in this area from the 70s through the 90s. And as Capt. Neil has mentioned, with the advent of the new composites, gives us a greater choice of rods to choose from Lamiglass. One thing i can add when comparing composites to our older glass blanks...with the advent of braided lines, glass blanks are more forgiving. Thats why they are still so popular with the pinhookers today.

Togmaster - thanks for this topic, I appreciate the time you took to write this all up. I've asked a lot of Q's about "Mike's Special's", and this thread and the one EC posted have taught me a lot.
Thanks, Billy

No Problem Billy40

Hey Billy no problem glade you enjoyed it. If you want a rod built I can recommend some good builders. Rod builder from this site is a good friend of mine and has built all my older 1143f's and turned me onto the rod back in the 80's. I cannot tell you the craftsmanship he puts into a rod. His cork work is the best I have seen! He is also an artist when it comes to wraps. You have to see it to believe it. I will get together with him as well as Capt. Neil from this site and take pictures of there rods and post them for all to see. Rodwinder lives in Brooklyn so guys in that area he?s the one. In the island Capt. Neil is the guy. Both guys are masters. Yes there are some others like Al Goldberg, and Russian Joe a. All are great choices. So I would suggest trying them all till you find the guy that makes the rod you like. That would be a tough choice being they all have different styles and things they do. Kind of like a signature. So any of these guys can make a good rod and hey if you got the talent go for it your self.

Skatemaster,

4-14 Oz. is a pretty broad spectrum to cover. My advice to you would be to start at an 11 Tip, i just finished an 11 tip rod for EC Newell Man that will be very versitle. I guess to question you need to ask yourself would be if you are gonna spend more time fishing with lighter 4-8oz sinkers or 10-14. If you gonna be on the light end the 11 should be fine, if you gonna be using heavier stuff you can go to a 12, 13 or 14. Water depth will also play a part in this and i dont think you should go beyond a 12 tip if you are fishing 70ft. or less. Just remember to go slow when trimming the blank, once you cut it you cant put it back,

As far as lenght every 114 i have wrapped has been between 7'7" and 7'8". If this is too long you could go down to 7'6". I wouldn't go any shorter than this because then you will be bringing the softer part of the blank very low so it will lose alot of power.

Let me know if i can be of further help to you )

Parabolic

Funny I find the s-glass smb-1143f{BILLY} to be more parabolic then the eglass was owndering if anyone felt the same. Funny thing about any 114-3f is you could have 1 rod in each tip from a 8 to a 15 tip and never need anpther rod to fish with !:) They are the best creation to the blank ever. Yes i know ther eis plenty to choose from but you have to own one and have it made correctly to truly understand the rod. If it is not built to spec and bal. it is not the same rod so make sure you knopw your stuff when building such a good blank:)

Tog,

I agree, when i was Flexing EC's rod i thought to myself that it was more parabolic but i thought it may have been the different color of the glass throwing me off now i see i was not wrong, they are still awesome !

Checking out Togmaster's 7'7" E-glass 9 tip and my 7'6" S-glass 9 tip, I noticed that Togmaster's had a faster flex and tended to "hinge" about 2 feet down from the tip. Meanwhile mine is parabolic to a little more than halfway down from the tip. Definitely gives Togmaster's rod more of a snappy action.

Regarding "built to spec and bal" I am still trying to understand how to build these rods, as is is definitely more complicated than I first thought.
