The pop up adds are killing me, and the turn off feature fails to work as well. This is something Dick would do or will be doing soon. I must say i have not been viewing this site as much as i use to because of this new feature. I also stop reading other posts about this , because it is such an anoying feature. On a scale of 1 to 10 of how annoying this is , i give it a 10. Please feel free to rate this new feature?

AAAURGH !

I told George how Annoying they were when they first started, But I gave him his due in deference to the fact that they help pay for the site. As you said you cant turn the dammed thing off. I've been in retail sales for many years and the last thing I would want is an add that p----s people off. I give it a 10.

Nerd

I have not wiped out my cookies today, and yet i still get the banner ad. There is something wrong on your side. But some of us like to clean our computers for more efficent use and wiping out temp files and cookie files are daily procedures.

Profile Preference

nerd - is there anyway you could store this preference in a new or existing field within the user profiles themselves? this way, the preference is kept on your server and will be applied regardless of whether cookies are activated and/or if you're using different computers to access the site.

I know of a bunch of folks who access this site from the library, etc. where they don't use the same computer each day, and as a result the preference doesn't "follow" them. they have to set it each time.

just a thought.

unHOOKT: We've considered this. Unfortunately, storing a user's preferences in their user account means the user must log in before we can use those preferences.
So, if a user doesn't log in right away, he'll still get ads and it will lead to the same confusion that we have now with cookies.

Anyway...
Because we've had a few complaints and (as unHOOKT pointed out) some people access this site from public computers, we are now looking in to alternatives to using cookies for storing advertisement preferences.

please... please... end the click-throughs

i rate it a "10"
i understand noreast has to pay their bills, and that means advertising, but there are other less intrusive types of advertising.
it only bothers me at work, where our network blocks cookies, but it has gotten worse and worse. remember when the 1st pop up popped up and i said "it starts with one, but after a while every page on the site will have a popup"
well, thats the way it went, and i realized it today, when i couldn't pm someone while at work.., every time i clicked the "send private message" button i got a tiny box with the pop-up ad.
its bad enough (but not your fault) that i have to reenter user/pass every time i post from my job, but i get in an "endless loop" with the popup ad and login.
i dont care, do what you want george, but if i didn't have a computer at home i would have stopped checking most of this site by now. i can only imagine its the same for lurkers or occasional readers. i feel bad for those guys.

READ THIS

Everyone who's been having trouble turning off the ads, try one more time. I think I've managed to hook it up so it no longer works on cookies alone, so you shouldn't have any more trouble.

If anyone has any more problems turning off ads or you're getting the ads over and over again or whatever, you can email or PM me directly and I will fix whatever problems you are having.

the end
