Hello
Cowfish,
I am glad you are flying away from this NE cold weather… and I am sure you are going to have a great time at Key West.
There are lots of types of fishing you can do when you get there… You have Flycasting & Light tackle action, party boat (bottom fishing), Backcountry and big game!
I've fished the Key West many years ago and recently spent a lot of exploration time just north of Florida. One thing for sure… you are going at the right time!!! If you are doing the shore thing - check the lagoons, beaches, cuts, mangrove covers and the bridges at night and you really can't go wrong! Just have an assortment of small pinfish, shrimp and mullet presentation and you will be good to go. I am talking about small grubs, swimming lures, bucktails and spoons. Concentrate the first and last few hours of the nights and your odds will increase dramatically. Also, night fishing can be explosive especially around docks and bridges! There you can find many big fish on the feed and they can be vulnerable!
As to the party boat, charters and guides… what I would do (and highly recommend) is that you visit the docks around 2:30 - 4:30PM and you will have a good idea who's doing what. That's usually the time the boats heading back and you can talk and see what's really happening! Ultimately, if you like what you see… talk to them and work out a plan!
Hope this helps!
