Capt. Neil or anyone else: Any recommendations on keeping my reel in the seat tight? The lower adjustable "union" gets loose frequently after casting. I have a St. Croix 10' spinning rod with a Shimano Sedona 6000 reel. I thought of uysing loctite after I unsuccessfully tried teflon tape around the threads (can't get to the part that bites!).

One more question- should the ferrules be kept dry at all times? I couldnt get my rod apart after a hot sunny day in the suds, and although the rod didn't get wet, it was stuck. I poured ice water onto the ferrules and a minute later it was free.

Thanks.

Is the reel seat slipping when you tighten it or does it get tight and then loosen? If it is the first, you cna probably replace the seat, if it is the latter try the low strength
loc-tite it will probably work.

Hi Sinaja,

This is a comon problem. It is caused by our hand being in the area of the locking nut. I have experienced it with spin and conventional reels. Some folks tighten the locking nut extremely tight. This is one example of how reel seats get broken. While I fish I just tighted up the locking nut. When I build a rod sometimes I will reverse the position of the reel seat from up locking to down locking. A trigger reel seat is a good example. Very seldom does my reel loosen up on a trigger reel seat. Since we take our reels off to wash them at the end of a trip or to change reels I wouldn't do anything permanent.

Regarding the ferrules, are we talking about glass or metal ferrules. Might you have installed it too tight? On metal ferrules I would wipe facial oil off my nose skin and rub it on the male ferrule before insertion. This is a fine lubricant. If it is a glass ferrule I think someone makes a wax or some thing to lube a graphite/fiberglass ferrule.

When installing rod sections into a ferrule asm slide the male part into place 90 degrees off from where it will be. Then twist the sections for final placement. When undoing twist first and the 2 piecec will come apart. DO NOT SHOVE sections together!!!!!!!!!
