Suppose my friend and I go up about 25 miles away and each catch our limit of 35 Herring(NJ Limit). What suggestions for keeping them alive on the trip back in the truck until the time we put them into our bait pen?

We are both VERY new to catching and keeping live herring, so ANY suggestions would be welcome, including: what kind of tank, what kind of oxygen system, what kind of chemicals, etc. Again ANY suggestions anyone has would be appreciated.

For example would a rubbermaid stock tank like

work?

Thanks
Bob

Bob, I am not exactly sure of the ratio but you need to have something like one herring to 2 gallons of water and the tank should be completly round. Herring are fragile fish that die pretty easily. Like I said I am not sure of the ratio but you should look into it and keep the water cold.
Good Luck

transporting

Bob,

cold Water with an airratior. You can buy an airratior that plugs into your cigerate lighter. Warning- I would also check the regulations for transporting live fish across a boarder ie: NJ to NY especially when there is differences in size and limits.

There's a company called Keepalive that makes equipment that might be useful to you. Make sure your herring will survive in your bait pen before you blow a lot of money on a transportation system. I've never had a bait pen but my friend does and he has trouble keeping delicate species alive in it, they usually don't last more than a day because of the lower oxygen and higher temperatures of the water in his marina compared to the ocean where he catches the bait.
