Stringer

Keep the fish alive by using a stringer. A stringer is a rope or sometimes a chain which you run through the fish mouth and out his gills. This works good only for a little while in my experience. Also, when you have more then one fish on the stringer they often die faster but it will keep them alive longer then just throwing them in the cooler.

Just curious

Why would you want to "try" yes the keyword here is "try" to keep them alive. Either bleed them or release them
. The stringer method will
"not"
keep them alive enough for a later release if thats what you have in mind.

Keeping them alive

First off, you will not be able to keep them alive for long. You would be much better off placing them in a cooler filled with a mixture of water and slush ice. Secondly, if you went the stringer method you would need a chain as they may chew their way thru the rope.

Bluefish

As everyone knows they die pretty quick when caught, in my experiences the fastest dieng fish, even as snappers they die within minutes of capture. Stripers are diferrent, ive kept 30 inch stripers on a string for hours alive but i dont think bluefish would stay alive unless you have a live well

The guys who suggested that you add an ice/saltwater mix to your cooler, are giving you some good advice... I've never heard of anyone culling blue fish. Stripers, yes, but not blues.

As for stripers, two key factors about live wells... Water Temp and Oxygen... you need aeration to keep fish alive for any length of time. If you have any empty soda bottles (20oz - 1 liter), you can fill them with water and put them in your freezer over night. Then just take them with you when you head out fishing and you can drop one or two in your live well as needed... they last a lot longer than just dumping ice into the live well and it will not dilute the salt water. As for your live well size, as long as the fish is submerged in water and has some room at the head and tail, you should be fine.

i agree with big keepers, if you think you're in the money with one then get it to the weigh station quick.

LOL........keeping it alive for the contest....

You asked how to do that on the 18th, if thats how your going to weigh in a fish.........by trying to keep it alive before the contest started, well, you know thats agin the rules.........

If your just trying to cull the blues, why.:confused::confused::confused::confused::confused:

Don't you have a scale on board? Weigh it and if it's under the low weight let it go.........:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

-First of all, Polygraph test. If I was going to try and keep a fish alive until the tournament and win, I would fail the polygraph test. Second off, the autopsy would show that the fish was caught quite sometime before the tournament actually happened. I merely asked the question because IF I was fishing some two hours away from my weigh station, I would want a method to keep my fish alive on the trip back. ALSO, I do have a scale on board and I DID release every fish that I caught during the tournament as they were all only between 8 and 9 pounds.

-dont accuse if you dont know

Thanks,
