anyone got any ideas on how to keep bunker fresh for a while?? i always use plastic baggies(ziplock)and just throw them ikn the freezer. any better ideas??
The best way to keep bunker fresh is to put them in bags and then put them in a cooler on top of ice. Try not to let them hit fresh water. The ice keeps them firm but doesnt freeze them.
keep them in a cooler with the zip locks and drain the water and add ice for a couple of days that may work. We kept them directly in ice without anything for a few days and they stayed well.
Keep in a cooler put down a layer of crushed ice, tons of kosher salt, then bunker, then salt, then ice, then salt, then bunker, etc. Make sure you use tons of salt and crushed ice and I've had them good to go for 4 or 5 days.
i think i will double bag them and stick them in the fridge, beacause uasaully i will have bunker left over from a sunday and want to use it on the next friday. i guess the freezer is too much
Catch fish until you don't have any bunker left to keep fresh!
Serious now, though, I agree with the others that avoid freezing and keep on ice is the way to go. It is also worth it to get a high quality cooler that way you're not buying many bags a day just to keep fish fresh. The investment in a good cooler should pay off for the ice expenses. Or you can do what i do: snag a bunker, and throw him back with a hook in him attached to a line on a pole.
Don't use salt !. It draws the blood to the surface & you'll have Cohos in a couple of days. It does lower the water temp & make them colder but just ice & salt water is the best.
