As with most equipment choices in fishing, much comes down to personal preference, what feels good to you, and your budget.

I think you'll find that for a fishing kayak the Hobie boats are the top choice. I've got more than one kayak and I really enjoy paddling...just not when I'm trying to fish. That's why I got a Hobie Outback.

The Hobie Mirage Drive is powerful and easy to use so you've got hands free fishin'. When the wind starts blowing or you're running into current you will be glad to have the pedal drive. You also don't have to spend lots of time learning to paddle and control your boat. Still it's best to take any boat out a few times before you try fishing from it.

The Hobies are more costly but when you factor in the included Mirage Drive System, paddle, seat and rudder it represents very good value. Most kayaks don't include the rudder system(as much as $300 extra) and none include the paddle in their pricing. A good paddle will cost as much as $200 or more and is really needed if you will be paddling all the time. Hobie saves you that expense.

Research and advice are important in making your selection but you absolutely have to try the different boats. Visit your dealers, spend a little time in a few boats and get the one that's best for you. Good luck.

try before you buy

many local kayak dealers have kayak demo days, or will allow you to peddle/paddle a kayak before purchasing (like a test drive when buying a car) diffently try out severl different yaks. Also before mounting anything on the yak (deph finder, rod holders etc) diffentely use the yak a few times before drilling holes. There are several very good kayak dealers on the island if you need info on a local dealer send me a pm for a recomendation.
