Which would you pick if you were building a new 36' downeaster...

John Deere 6125AFM4, 526HP @ 2100RPM
Lugger L1276A2, 525HP @ 2100RPM

Both are the same as far as size, weight, torque, and efficiency.

Whatta 'bout a......

Why are you narrowing it down to two engines?

Consider a Cummins..............

Most important consider your local engine dealer who is going to service the "Beast". Parts Availability, Technician Availablity, ease and cost of repairs, No Engine is without fault, it is the how fast can I get back to fishing should I have a breakdown that counts, and at what cost????

What ever engine you choose, get to know the Service and Parts Dept Managers at the dealer.
They are VIP's as well as the technicians.

Get the BIG picyture, then decide!

Hay, Squidly I run a 220hp deere in my 28 crowley/beal great engine. Big cube in 416 / 220hp 2600 rpm. 2700 hrs. My friend has 6000 hrs on his. I must say they are big for HP produced. I am putting mine up for sale. Also looking to build a 36 ft. I guest you are not looking for a flush deck I think you will need a engine box thats a large engine. I will be using a cummins. Good luck (George)

Cummins, if you say your going up and down the coast you should be concerned about a adequate dealer and parts support network. Althought Deere makes outstanding engines I think you might run into a bit of trouble finding service. Cummins on the other hand is all over the place.

I do like the QSM11 by Cummins as well. I looked into the service network for John Deere and its terrible. Out of the question.

How is the Cat C9? Ive seen a few of these in commercial boats.

CAT

Some of the charter guys out east really like the Lugger. It's bullet proof, however most of them opt for the CAT. The main and in some cases the only reason is the easy of getting any part any time within 24 hours. They value down time more than choice.
