Congratulations on the lathe. Google plug building tutorials and I think you might come across a few. I started by following as many as I could find, step by step, and then modifying them to my individual taste. I keep a binder of tutorials and pictures. Cedar is easy to work with and I've found supplies at the local lumber suppliers, as well as cut offs at the fence company, and I've even used cedar ballisters. I've spent many hours scanning Lure/Plug building discussion boards. From what I've seen here, you have some master plug builders that produce some very nice plugs, and might be willing to give advise. I'm far from a master plug builder, but hope to get there after a few years of learning with many trials and errors.
Keep your tools sharp and have some fun making chips. Think about a dust collection system to keep your lungs clear. My dust collector was the best investment I've made in a long time.
