Hey all,

After reading many great reports about Jamaica Bay I think I will give it a try this weekend. I would appreciate any info you all can give me on a reliable launch site and any advice on where to head once I am in the water.

Thank you,
Larry

Larry -

There are 3 ramps that I am aware of, to launch in Jamaica Bay:

1 - Nassau County Park - Bayview Avenue. This is a very good ramp, plenty of water at all tides and near the fish. Only issue is that it is a Nassau County Park and Requires a Nassau County Ramp Permit. The park manager is nearly always on duty and he WILL come by and see you when you drive in. You will have a problem with out the sticker.

2 - Town of Hempstead Marine Ramp - Inwood. There is town of Hempstead marina at the back of Jamaica Bay that has a ramp. I don't think you need any kind of permit here, but the end of the ramp has a sharp drop-off that is dry and dead low tide. You would only be able to launch and recover here at mid to high tide. Good news is no permit needed (I think).

3 - There is a ramp along the seawall just west of the cross bay bridge. I have never used it but am told it is a good steep ramp, just be careful with what you leave behind in your car at the parking lot. I'm not sure on the permit requirements. Hopefully someone here is more familiar with that particular ramp and can offer up some more info.

Good Luck!

cross bay bridge

The police are currently prohibiting kayakers from launching from the cross bay bridge at both parking lots.. One our our members was told that signs are going to be posted stating that launching crafts is prohibited.

The KFA-NY has been in contact with the Superintendent at Gateway National Park to attempt to continue to allow launching from these lots and/or to come to some reasonable resolution with limited launching (ie permits, day time use only etc). I will update this post as I hear more about this spot.

After reading a post on KFS about the launching situation at Cross Bay Blvd I contacted GNRA and posted the following on the KFS site:

I spoke with reps from the Gateway National Recreation Area about CBB and other areas around J/Bay. They are very aware of all the kayakers and canoeist that launch from CBB even though it is not a legal launching spot. The Gateway National Recreation Area are very sympathetic to our cause and would like to work something out so kayakers and canoeist can launch from multiple areas around the bay. They are going to work on a possible future permit for kayakers and canoeist to launch at CBB and other areas around Jamaica Bay.

So please if you run into a park ranger that informs you not to launch in any given area around J/Bay please don't give them any lip or else we can forget about any possible permit.

Soooo

So is my best bet Floyd Bennet? I know there is a $50 permit fee. I just have to figure out a way to get one before I go this weekend because the office does not open till 9 and I will be there at sunrise.

Jamaica Bay

I keep my boat at the Inwood Marina. Like it was stated before, be careful a low tide, the ramp is short. I know the last few years they have only been allowing Town of Hempstead residents to launch there, you can call to find out 516 239-0945. As far as where to fish, look for the bunker schools. If you have a chart look towards Grassy Bay or Head of Bay. I know I may catch s..t for saying that but there is enough for everyone. Good luck.
