Marked Wire
Yes, the marked wire works well. Give you a decent idea of how deep you are. I use wire marked every 50 feet, Red, White then Blue. Easy to remember that way.
Some marked is better than others as far as the tape/wrap used. A good Bait/Tackle shop should know how to do it and make sure it's not too big to get caught up in your guides.
