I have some suffix 65 pound solid braid. I received it free and I am wondering if it is worth using on my stella 20000 to cast poppers to yellowfin and for jigging YFT/Bigeye tuna. If not, then I think I may buy some tufline.

Sufix is the nicest coated spectra braid going right now. 65lb is kind of pushing it for serious tuna fishing, most would use 80lb.

I have another 20K spool with 80 pound tufline.

I read somewhere either on Noreast or other board of guy who tested the breaking strenth on suffix braid and he found that each time line broke at way below the line rating on spool. That is the only negative I have heard of to date.

Have it on all my jigging reels. Great stuff. Never heard of it breaking considerably under-test. I used 50lb in December to catch a number of monster pollack, caught so many I just locked up the drag to see what would break first (old rod, LOL). Hooks bent out, ripped lips, but NO problems with the line. I'd say go for if the smaller bluefins are around. Otherwise, 80lb is better...

Sufix is a great line!....

Set up 3 reels with braid last year. Got deals on 3 different kinds. Spooled one reel with Sufix 65lb and gave it a 75-100' topshot of 50lb ande pink. Spooled another with 65lb Power pro... same set up, and the last with 100 lb Jerry Brown and an 80lbs topshot. 1st season on braid, and with the exception of my Father in Law nesting one of my reels so bad that I had to cut it off, They all preformed incredible. The sufix was on my primary reel and I used it all season with no disappointments.

I believe that the breakage test comments were actually a version of stren... not actually sure, but pretty positive. Mark

I've used it for awhile now and love it. It has been much more consistant than Power Pro. I won't buy that anymore. I've used it for tarpon and had it rubbed around pilings and it holds. I use it for bass fishing in rock beaches and it has held. Its also been used on tuna with no problems. I also like the JB but not for spinners. My buddy tried the Daiwa and that was breaking under test everytime. Use it you will like it.

Enclosed is post that I mentioned earlier from guy who tested out some of the braids and concluded that suffix braid was breaking at substantially less than pound test rated for line. Saw it on stripers Online website: As mentioned in my earlier post this is the only negative post I have seen about suffix but it has made me hold off on respooling my reels with it until additional tests are completed.

Because I was so surprised at the results of my makeshift test yesterday I decided to do a more accurate test. It's not laboratory quality , but I was as careful as possible ,and I'm confident the results are pretty close.

I tested 4 samples each of 15# Berkley Big Game .015 dia. and 30# Sufix Performance Braid .011 dia.

I cut each piece the same length , and tied a loop knot on each end.
I hung each piece from a hook on the ceiling and hung a 5 gal. bucket from a hook on the other end.
I slowly added water to the bucket with a watering can so I didn't shock the line.
I kept my hand an inch or two under the bucket handle and caught it when the line failed.
I then weighed the bucket and the hook with a digital fish scale.
One mono sample failed at the knot , probably my bad, so I didn't use that sample and tied another.

Her are the results:

15# Big Game

20# 3oz
17# 13oz
19# 9oz
17# 2 oz
Avg. 18# 10.75oz

30# Sufix

19# 14oz
21# 6oz
18# 5oz
18# 3oz
Avg. 19# 7oz

The 30# braid performed slightly better than my rough test yesterday, but still way below it's rating and less than 1# better on average than 15# mono, really no difference to speak of.
I could have gotten a bad spool but doubt it.
I plan on getting some samples of heavier braid to test to see how they do as compared to there rating.

No offense to your test but I have way different results. I took 30lb suffix braid and mid knotted it to 50lb berkley big game mono on both ends of the braid. Tied a double surgouns knot in both monos. Pulled on the lines with 30lb Boga grip and bottomed it out many times. The boga bottoms at about 33lb. There was no breaking in the braid or signs of breaking.

I have used 65lb Suffix last year and although it is extremely smooth which is usually the best feature other than its a braided line I used it on a blackfish trip. My first time using it on a party boat for blackfish I let out some line and about 10ft into my spool the line dug underneath itself and it caused a huge knot in my spool which caused me to stop fishing. Fortunately the mate was able to get the line out in my spool and I was able to fish. That was the only problem I had but it caused me to stick on PowerPro which I love. Now it may sound like spooling was the problem here but actually I spooled it on with an electronic spooling machine and it was done with tension exactly the same as spooling powerpro but I have never had a problem with Powerpro and this first time I had a problem with Suffix but other than that I have not had any problems. My answer is go what feels best. I know that Powerpro is a lot rougher but in my opinion you can't beat it. The best way is to experiment and see what line works right for you. By doing this you cannot go wrong and you can make your own decisions. Hope this helps C U out there...

i've completely abandoned power pro. with TUF Line and JB Solid being as cheap as they are, I have no reason to use PP. Haven't tried Suffix, but I don't like their mono so I guess it's kept me away.

As the guy above said, use whatever you prefer, you'll have more confidence in it and fish it harder.

And so it was. The softer the braid, the more tension it requires to be properly spooled onto a reel. What's good for PP is too light for Sufix. You really do need to put a lot of tension on the line, especially if you are filling your reel with soft uncoated braid like JB or Tuf Line+. I fill all my reels with braid by hand, and use a set of cardboard friction washers to apply pressure to the filler spool - it's a good exercise for tilefishing, and the washers get pretty hot. The kind of heavy duty electric line winder you need to put braid on tuna reels runs a couple grand.

Spooling problems...

As I was told when I switched to braid last year... You wont have a big problem with pulling the line down into the spool if you remember with braid, to sweep the line side to side every so often, as you spool up or as you reel a fish in. This has the effect of laying a more or less longitudinal line of braid back and forth across the normal winding pattern and helps to keep the line from digging in under tension. Seemed to work for me last year. :)

That's one way to do it, but I don't think I have the stones to try it with a larger reel. 800 yards of 130lb braid traling behind the boat will most likely produce way more drag that I would want, especially at higher speed.

I did it once with my 80W. Thank God for low gear, even with it I was whipped. Never again.
