I have been looking at the photos on the front page and it seems that Montauk is a great place to fish...but is it really as good as it seems?.

It seems like everyday they nail Stripers Blues and some Bonita.

I fish in North Jersey beaches and the action don?t seem to be anywhere as consistent as Montauk.

I will admit it does look beautiful there. That part of Long Island is just so much different than the Jersey beaches. Its just much more rockier with cliffs. Jersey is all flat with fine sandy beaches,. with lots of Jetties.

Better Than Most? Yes in my book

I fish the south shore of Long Island which resembles the Jersey shore line more than Montauk Point. Although I have had Blue Fish blitzes on the south shore of LI. I have never expierianced or seen a "Bass" blitz like I have at Montauk. I've had great Bass days\nights on the south shore but I have never seen the water black with Bass and bait fish like I have seen at Montauk. I only get out to Montauk a few times a year but I rarely get skunked in Montauk and I have expierianced multiple long blitz sessions. I have never fished Cape Cod but I would imagine it has similar charateristics of Montauk.

It's not an over statement when you hear people call Montauk the Mecca. But it is fishing and if you are in the wrong place in Montauk at the wrong time you can get that skunk smell on you. Mean while there could be guys less than a 1/4 mile away whacking the Bass.

If you've never been there, get there. Make sure you have a good pair of boots or korkers. There are a lot of slippery rocks and irregular places to stand. Be ready to fish around the clock and move around to maximize your chances of being in the right place at the right time. Best bet would be to get Bill Wetzel to take you for a charter. Bill advertises on this web site.

Montauk

I have spent at least one day per weekend, usually two, in Montuak, since the second week in September. Thus far it seems I am pretty much cursed there. Granted I have been involved in some blue fish/albie blitzes but other than some deep night, respectable bass, (working for hours and hours)I have not seen any bass blitzes. I've been getting plenty of "You should have been here yesterday's." Sure I could probably score pretty well from my north shore spots in the surf or my tin. However, the potential for mega blitzes, and cows in the darkness, and more importantly in the surf, coupled with the most beautiful place on Earth, where 90% of the vehicles have either a rod or a surf board on the roof in the fall, draw me from Huntington every weekend. The potential there is too phenomenal to ignore, but man, you've got to be willing to put your time in.

Montauk lives up to the hype

For all the skeptics out there Montauk is worth the trip. I was out there four days last week and one this past week. Striper/Bluefish/Bonita blitz everyday. Fished two days on the fly rod for bass action from the surf, three days with the surf rod (wind picked up). Like SurfacStrike said there is no other place that I have seen or heard of where the Stripers blitz in such a manner. One day they were so thick in 2" of water you could have walked on water. The key is you have to put in the time.

Montauk is well known for it's fall fishing.Migrating fish will come past the point and take up temporary residence throught the fall.Feeding on the loads and loads of white bait and then later herring.Montauk is not just a fall thing. May through August offer great action with resident fish. I fish all the months pretty hard out there, but believe it or not one of my favorite months is August. Long hard nights can yeild large fish, but you gotta work for em.-- Back bays, open beaches, rocky points, deep coves, wind in the face, wind at the back, life threatening water, quiet serenity, and it will take you more than a life time to learn it. Some people will tell you that Montauk is easy. They are the blitz fisherman that have hit it good a couple of weeks out of the year --if that. Fish it hard all year and you will gain her respect, find how demanding she can be on your mind, body, and socialization, and she just might let you in on a secret or two. HAve fun!!

No surfcaster's resume would be complete without him/her putting their time into Montauk. It's definately a must-fish place.

Unfortunately thr crowds have just gotten so out of hand in recent years. :(

Yes, Henry, I'm afraid it's all true--no hype. Montauk is by far and away the best fishing spot on Long Island. In fact, it's SOOOOOO much better than what's in second place that it would make absolutely no sense for you or anyone else from New Joisey to stop, or even slow down, enroute. Just truck on east until ya can't go any farther east---what could be simpler to find, even?

There is no other spot on LI where you have a chance of getting a cow, so don't even bother with them. Spread the word all around your fair state, it's a true Green Acres of bassdom---"Mon-tauk is the place to be/Surf fishing that's the life for me/Cows spreading out so far and wide/take Long Island just give me that Mecca-side".

Oh, and don't forget, they have "uniform inspection" out there--ya have to have all the required equipment hanging off your belt before you're allowed to fish there :)

Someday I would like to sojourn Montauk though. It looks rather confining from the pictures but still pulchritudinous nonetheless. Just thinking about watching the incandescent sunrise from the east makes me joyful.

I'll just have to stick with the good old NJ beaches for now and hope those Cows and Blues start blitzing my way!

Poetic and Cerebral

Henry, nicely put. But the picture you posted makes me want to take us on a tangent thread. Here is a hypothetical question. Would you surfcasters rather catch one 60 - 70 lb fish and get skunked the rest of the year or would you rather have a staple of keeper 20 # ers the rest of the year every time you go. Can't have both pick one.

montauk

I think SurfaceStrike hit on the head. Montauk per square inch or whatever measure is far and away the best. there is nothing close. unfortunately(or Fortunately) Moter Nature rips you a new AH0le at Montauk. but isn't that what we are all looking for. If you could fish in an aquarium where fish bite all day. would you? I wouldn't Montauk is the last Frontier. I hadn't been to Montauk in 20 yrs, due to family and life in general. hit it a couple of times, and it was like meeting an old friend. I fished the Sea Otter last weekend, in horrendus conditions puked all night had five keepers , the pool at 32 lbs, thats montauk

May there always be that special place to fish

That?s a very good hypothetical question SurfaceStrike. I think I would choose that cow. I say that because fish like that make a lifetime memory.

Hitting that 50# marker for stripers is a huge goal for many avid striper anglers. I remember reading an article in a newspaper about this old man (I guess in his late 70?s or something) who was a big striper sharpe. Hes been striper fishing for 40 or 50 years and has never hit that 50# mark. He said that was one goal he always wanted but could never achieve, even though he could catch all the stripers he wanted.

I'll take both.

Is that a choice.
If you fish enough that just greatly increases your chances big time.Well that's what you might get if you fish tauk enough. There's some night's were i've fished for 8 hour's strait,& only land 1 fish, but that one fish is 25#'s or better. Then there's the other night's were it's all 20#er's for 2 or 3 hours strait.
I have some freinds that cry they can't catch a fish over 20#'s,Then again there the weekend angler's.

What you give is what you get.....

the best Striper fisherman i know is divorced.....eeks out a living as a handyman and is missing most of his teeth.
point is we all have to ask ourselves ...."How far am I willing to go with this?"
