I was wondering if it was too early to use plugs or any type of lure for striped bass right now. I'v been fishing acouple of times for them now, and I'v only used claims, i will try bunker soon, but I'v noticed the bait shops telling me to use bait and I also noticed alot or all of the fisherman around me are also using bait. I was fishing day time hrs. Is there a reason for this, or is this just a preferred method right now cause of the size of the fish or start of the season. I would like too head out again tonight and try some lures but im not sure if it will just be a waist of time cause of some specific reason. Is there anyone that can help me on this one. Thanks.

Mostly temperature related and food availability

You can catch bass right now on top water plugs and swimmers. You just need to be throwing to fish that are chasing bait actively, which in my opinion is harder to find this time of year. I personally feel the water temps are still keeping most bass down low looking for easy meals and clams will probably outproduce as it usually does throughout April. The search for bait can be hit or miss as it migrates into the warming water. But it only takes a pod of bait to move through and trigger them at times to show you where they are. I prefer artificials and if I had to fish in the day I would be making slow presentations down low with light leads, bucks, bass assasins and storm shads. Never hurts to make a few casts with the topwater everyonce in a while to try and raise a fish, especially when bait is present. I think the commotion at times has a way of turning lethargic fish on. Sometimes after a few casts topwater, switching back to lead will produce.
Ideally, you need to find where the bait "hangs" for a spell. hit it at night and you'll increase your chances. Good luck.

Thank you. I thought maybe it was just me noticing something that just happen to be a freak incident. Now that you explained it, and looking at it from a diff. prospective, it actually makes more sense now. much appreciated.
