I remember when I first got my kayak, people use to laugh at me and say, wait till you land a good size Bluefish, he gonna take you for a ride. Well I got news for all those un-experienced boaters, fisherman, NO WAY in heck is that going to happen!
In the past I could not confirm that, due to that fact that I would always catch small fish. This year 2008 fishing has been great, with plenty of bunker out there, and Blue's chasing them. I have been catching Blue's over 31". Yes, they will turn my kayak from side to side and at times they will pull me a few feet ahead, but not take me for a ride. Don't believe the hype
So for all you new to fishing on a kayak, use caution and never take your eyes off the boaters and yet-skiers while fishing, and always keep a knife in front of you for an emergency.

Actually the most pull is when you reel in, you reel yourself to the fish basically. They can pull you a bit. My real question is where did you find room for all those Bluefish on your kayak? haha
It's a little scary,I have no choice but to kill them and put them in front by my legs.On that day I had 5 Blue's, I think I can fit 1 more. Normally I catch and release, but some friends and family have asked me to give them fish.

is it possible for bluefish to take me for a ride

I don't know - depends on whether or not you can get a saddle on 'em.....

As far as what to do with them after you catch them - I would leave the stringer idea out. I would brave their teeth trying to get the line through their gills.
I use a mesh bag tied off onto a cleat on my canoe & float it over the side.

Leave the stringers for the bass.

stringers?

there are plenty of different types of stringers out there i have one(forgot the brand) but its rubber coated steel cable that has a steel rod about 7" long with a loop on the end u push it up through the gill and out the mouth never come anywhere near those choppers! i use it all the time for blues.

My stringer

Made mine from a 10' length of S/S cable that I crimped both ends, one throgh a 12" heavy wire tie that gets pushed through the gill and out the mouth and the other loop I crimped a brass clip to hook to my kayak. Works great and the fish are still alive and fresh when you get back to shore. Captain Jerry gave me the idea.

I've had plenty of bluefish sleigh rides.... especially on fish that are over 10 lbs.
Last year I took a buddy to a spot where we fish ocean side sandbars. The blues hang out in the white water. He said that he wasn't aware he was getting pulled until he saw me hook up and go flying past him (and I'm in a big malibu 2).

Oh yeah...if you're near white water, they somehow always manage to pull the yak into the spot where the waves are breaking. I guess they're smarter than we give them credit for.

I agree with a stringer, but be careful if you're on the ocean side, especially if the fish are bleeding as the sharks are a lot closer than you think and they all like bluefish

When people talk of "sleigh rides" they do not mean the fish is causing your kayak to leave a roostertail or tossing massive wakes as you pass others :)
It's not the Orca being pulled backwards with 3 barrels connected...

A decent fish will pull you a bit.
The fish pulls and you reel. The yak moves.
