Reading all the reports and it seems like there are a lot more White and Blue Marlin being caught this year and early in the year at that? If you factor in an assumed drop in fishing pressure offshore due to the crazy gas prices, my feeble mind is saying it's a banner year for billfish off of LI.

Any else think this way?

Its not just Long Island... Several boats out of NJ have been reporting such catches, hook-ups, and raises of marlin thus far this year. Canyon Runner recently reported an est. 700 lb blue smashed their spread recently as well. The water's warm. The food is there. The pressure has been decreased due to fuel prices. I say make the best out of it and catch em' up! I was lucky enough to release one already this year (my first ever).

Now I need a 200+ lb tuna!!!!!

Hey guys, my name is Chris and I work with The Billfish Foundation (TBF).

As many of you know, white and blue marlin migrate through the northeast during late summer, early fall. Its great to see all the reports of billfish this early in the summer.

Although there seem to be reports of billfish catches, we at TBF receive very little tagging data from the northeast region.
We are currently working to expand our conservation ethic of catch-and-release and develop a network of billfish tagging data in the northeast region of the U.S.

Our tag and release program works to provide an important source of information to scientists with the goal of improving the knowledge base necessary to enhance long term sustainable management of billfish and other pelagic species.

For those of you who encounter billfish and would like to participate in TBF's Tag & Release Program please visit us at www.billfish.org or call 1-800-438-8247

If anyone would like a pdf containing our specific data on billfish in the northeast please contact me at [email protected]

Thanks

Its a little eraly this year, but billfish catches in the canyons around here usually are pretty good in August, both blues and whites.
I've been doing the offshore column for Nor'east for 4 or 5 years now and every year the reports come alive with billfish around the first or second week in August, depending on how far south you go the early the bite turns on.

I think more awareness regarding the billfish tagging program would be great and this is definitely something I would be interested in. The problem is that we are usually fishing for tuna and have only rarely encountered billfish in past seasons. Last year we caught and released one white marlin in ten trips to the edge, while this year we have hooked 8 and released three in three trips. Perhaps there are more around this year. Probably makes sense given the unusually warm water. This past weekend our temps ranged from 81-83.
