Seeking recommendations for a good setup (rod, reel, line) for inshore tuna trolling. (I have seen Seeker & Calstar rods recommended here, but what model, length would be good for inshore trolling, or are they only good for chunking? also anyone tried the Penn Formula 2-speed reels - or are Internationals the best bet?)

I use penn Internationals and caught 7 skipjack tuna and you need use 16s and 30sw but i like Penn Formula 2-speed reels. You need buy 15kg or 24kg and maybe i will buy Penn Formula 2-speed reels 24kg but i use heavy tackle for shark and tuna. I have 30sw,50sw and 80sw.

I agree with B.A. the 20, 30 fathom lines and the major inshore wrecks. I think the TT and Bicardi qualify as offshore. Cabo 45 I often read your posts with some amusement. Like how your moniker is Cabo 45 yet your comments on overnighting at the Canyon seemed at odds and catching skippies on major hardware. In any event I'm glad you enjoy the 24KG it must be a joy to fish with. (by the way do you work for Penn, the reel is only being advertised now it wont be availible to the public for at least two months.

BIG RICK/BJACK GO BACK TO THE FOR SALE BOARD, I BROUGHT IT BACK UP FROM THE DEPTHS. BEAR IN MIND THE MAJOR EXPENSE OF GOING FOR THE GOLD. I SHARK THREE LINES BUT TROLL 7 OR 8. THATS A LOT OF RUBLES FOR THR REELS. ALSO IF GOING FOR THE GOLD YOU SHOULD PROBABLY LOOK AT THE NEW LINE OF 50 AND 70. TO EACH HIS OWN AND MIKE IS CORRECT, YOU DONY WANT TO LOSE THE MAKO OF A LIFETIME, BUT IF YOUR JUST STARTING OUT INSHORE YFT AND BFT ARE SMALLER THAN CANYON SIZE AND MOST SHARKS ARE 50 TO 150 I'M OUT FOR THE FUN, THE SUN AND MAYBE ACOUPLE OF STEAKS AND I LOVE LIGHTER TACKLE FISHING nO NEED FOR A CHAIR OR MAJOR WEIGHT LIFTING. AGAIN B, ATITUDE MAKO MIKE AND OTHERS ARE ALL CORRECT AND HAVE MUCH MORE EXPERIANCE THAN I, BUT IF YOUR NEW TO THE INSHORE/OFFSHORE SCENE AND DONT WANT TO DROP 5 GRAND THE 30 GRAPHITES (15KG AND TLD 25, 30) ARE THE WAY TO GO.

For trolling inshore I used 20-30 lb class 6' Seeker rods. Reels were shimano 25's and Everol 12/20's,20/30's,and 30/50.
Everol is also a great reel for trolling, built like a rock, and the price is alot better than shimano and penn. They seem to hold up well.
Inshore trolling I perfer the smaller stuff,20-30 lb class.I keep the 50 lb stuff for sharking.

rods n reels

Hi all:
Since I've built my own rods for the past 30 years , I can't say what commercial rod is best. I found that the reel is what does is for me. An old
hunting partner who said ,when asked which gun is the best deer killer, "the deer don't care what kind of gun kills it", goes for fishing reels for me.
A good 6/0 or 9/0 Penn still does the job on sharks and most if not all YFT, or BFT that chances the inshore waters. Gold is beautifull , but not necessary. If you have the extra Sheckles,Deutchmarks,Guilders, etc, then go for it.
Good boathandling, good rod and reel work should wack just about any inshore fish.
I build my own rods for a couple of reasons.
1.) I enjoy creating something that is both functional and a thing of beauty. Something that is different from the rest.
2.) I feel most commercial rods are made with profit uppermost in the manufacturers mind.
Enough of my pontificating. Sorry 'bout that. Thanks for listening to me.

everol

Hi B.A.:
Is that everol your talking about a Italian built reel? I remember that way,way back (lot's o years ago) they
had a Everol reel around. Is it the same company? Where do u get it repaired if needed?
Where is it sold?
It was a well built reel then, so I assume that it's well built now.

Everol

Hi Bigeye,
yes, their made in Italy and are better than ever. Now you can get them with solid frames, high speed bearings, custom handles. They are getting real big on the west coast because of the great freespool and high drag settings.I got them from Donart in Freeport,L.I.
I believe if you need repair that they might send them out, might even repair them themselves if they stock the parts.I favor Shimano over all reels but for the money I don't believe they can be touched.50 lb class reel for about 300.00,not bad. They really are built like tanks.

If you are planning on stocking reels and rods do your self a favor and save some real money by going to www.campbellsprotackle.com There prices are about a third to a half less than the prices here in the states. I placed an order a month ago, shipping was free and they arrived in 5 days from Australia.

I was wondering, does anyone have any experience with the Okuma 50W silver series 2 speed reels? Considering purchasing either: Everol, Okuma, Penn(international), or Shimano (tiagra) all 50lb class 2 speed or not. Penn 50tw is what is my number one choice as of right now. Any suggestions/recommendations on these aforementioned reels? Thanks in advance.
