Hi folks,

Now that the bugs are out in full force, I need to know what is your favorite bug repellent?

There were a few times when I was working my haunts… a few bugs practically had a feast and carried me away. I used to use the Avon "Skin SoSoft" …but I think those bug got too used to it.

Alberto:

I dont look for a particular brand, but one that a high percentage of "DEET" (say 90% and up) in it. Some say its better to apply to your clothing than skin (hmmm, what if ya fish naked <W>??)when using the high %. For me it seems to work on repelling everything we get in S NJ mosquitos, gnats, black flies and even our infamous greenhead.

Only thing that keeps 'em away when fishing the Nissequoge without a breeze is a combination of OFF & cigars.

Let me clarify........

You spray the OFF onto your skin &/or clothing - you smoke the cigars.

Here is an interesting fact....

Those nasty blood-sucking insects find us because we exhale Carbon Dioxide. They sense our "exhaust" and that triggers something in their brain that rings the dinner bell. Now I'm not saying that we should go around holding our breath. But that is one of the reasons why cigars and cigarettes seem to slightly repel the critters (the smoke masks the carbon dioxide).

I don't smoke anymore and I don't have a solution other than a saturation of "Deep Woods Off".

Wader, if I ever see a puff of smoke coming from the river I'll know that you forgot to put out your cigar before spraying more OFF (that stuff is like GASOLINE!).

Bug dope

I use Bens in the orange can, Seems to work best for me,but anything with around 30% deet will work.
Just for gods sake dont ever get it on your plastic reel handles or monofilament line.It eats certain kinds of plastic.I have a couple of old reels that always have soft sticky handles. It aint very healthy for certain plastic lures either.
Why are there so many of those winged varmints?

I use OFF to spray me AND the bugs, really drives them away, plus, it's VERY funny to see a lot of bugs drop dead about a half hour to an hour (depends on how much you spray on them) after you spray them, and if you miss them, you have OFF on your skin, if you REALLY want fun, use gas and go to a HUGE bonfire :p

Hi,

90% or more Deet is the best. Try and get the Deep Woods Off in the little blue/white pump sprey container. I found it does a better job of atomizing the stuff then the Bens bottle so you can apply less and cover more area.

Make sure you never put this stuff near you eyes, it burns like fire.

I never put it on my skin.

Folks,
Thanks for the great tips... but I did not get the chance to purchase any repellent (rushed out to fish) and boya…. Did I pay for it!

Once again, late last night I was slammed dunked by those blood-sucking-no-good-for-nothing gnats and mosquitoes! ARG! :(

Don't know why I am a bug magnet this year?
I will try Deep Wood and Off this time and see what happens.
What other advice you've got?

Most people mention that the better solution is to spray on your clothes and not directly on to your skin. Has anyone encountered any negative effects to spraying on surf attire like rubber jackets or waders?

IBEW, what is the reason to stay away from dark colored clothes?

Thanks

I have this sub-sonic contraption that I hang from my surf belt that emits a sub-sonic sound that mimics dragonfly wing beats. It actually works (a little better on green heads)! I tried w. and w/o DEET. The DEET I use regardless is 100%- watch it near plastic things as it will melt some polymers.

The reason I say stay away from dark colored clothing is because I noticed
more natz, mosquitos when I wore a black hat etc.
when I wore light colored clothes I notice less of those pests.
Use the bug juice & light colored clothes.

Hey Buddy,
Interesting stuff… This is the first that I've heard about it. Could you please elaborate a bit more on the sub-sonic contraption? Also - Which brand has 100% DEET?

Especially stay away from black clothing hats,shirts,pants,shorts...

Hi IBEW,
I've heard that from various sources, but unfortunately bright color clothing is not an option where I fish at night. ;)

After reading this thread, I dont think fishing in foul weather is that bad. All of a sudden going out in the rain is not so bad.You may get a little wet when it rains and it keeps you cool but atleast you dont get the bug bites!!!. Hmmmmmm instead of going out tomorrow nightmaybe tonight is the better night to go out.
