fin strike makes an excelent large bait
rig part#560.this is a tadem rig.causway
should have them.as far as rigging the bait.finde squid in the 4 to 6 inch range.(sea wave brand.) first remove the wings from the back of the squid,to prevent it from spinning.top hook once through the back.bottom hook through the head.it'll make sence when you see the rig.fish 50 to 70 feet.

good luck

Wendy,
I use a different approach, that seems to draw more strikes and hookups than the tandem hook rigs. I rig the hook on light wire and run the end of the wire right through the squid so the hook sits right in the tentacles, then I use floss and a rigging needle to tie the end of the squid to the wire. Just go through the end of the body and make several wraps around the wire and then tie three square knots. do that four or five time and the squid won't slide down the wire and bunch up at the hook. Its almost exactly like a swordfish rig. Attach the wire to your three way swivel using a snap.

I do the same as MakoMike.

Very often Terminal Tackle will have very small bluefish hooks that are already rigged with wire that are sold loose over the counter. They are ideal for rigging whole squid for larger Fluke. I using a rigging needle to pull the wire directly through the center of the torpedo wings. One strand of dental floss is all that is needed.

huh?

makomike, i understand your description of the rigging process. how often do you need to do this when you are fluking and they are biting? i guess you make these rigs in advance. how many would you bring with you for a couple of hours of fluking?

Wire Whole Squid Rig

If the squid are small (4 inches or less), I just hook them through the tip of the body with a plain hook or even a bucktail. Just give the fish a chance to eat it.

For larger squid, that I want to use whole and target larger fish, I use a wire rig. I made up half a dozen over the winter and keep them in the tackle box in a ziplock bag. Instead of wrapping the squid like Mike, I use about 6 inches of cable, crimp a hook at one end, use a few beads keep half of a float away from the hook, a bead in front of the float to keep it from going over the loop and then crimp a loop in the front.

Use a bait needle to thread the rig up through the body. The float will keep the body from sliding down the rig and help keep the bait up from the bottom a little. The beads will keep the hook so that it is just sticking out of the body.

Attach the whole rig to a leader off of a three way. You can put a spin and glow rig on the leader or just use a plain piece of mono.

Opi,
I don't keep a atock of pre rigged squid. Once you get used to it doesn't take but two minutes or so to rig one. About the same amount of time it takes to cut the squid pennants that everyone uses when fishing spearing or sandeels.

DoctorFish,

The float is small. In the picture above I cut a float in half. It provides a little bouyancy, but a little current keeps the bait in the proper orientation. It might be a problem on a "no" drift day, buy I haven't used it on one. Only used it in Greenport where there is plenty of current.

The whole squid are still working well as well as large strip baits (blues, robins, and fluke). I still recommend to people to try the smelt from the grocery store, whole if you can get them but cleaned also works. They are gigantic and cheap. I am making some silver bullets up now that will have a stinger hook because I have been having the whole squids and smelts stolen too frequently.

I rig whole squid using 2 5/0 fluke hooks and 50lb leader. First snell one hook and leave a tag end a couple of inches long. Then snell the second hook below the first about 4 inches apart. This will vary dependig on the size of the squid. Hook the top hook in the very tip of the squid. Place the second hook thru the eyes on the head.
Try the supermarket for squid. They are much cheaper and perfect size. Good luck.
