First off, thanks to all who have answered a question or two mine previously, I truely value your opinion and judgement, you know more than me...I was wondering what you thought about a manual infating PFD. I have one, never had to activate it, but would you recomend NOT using it for kayaking? again, this season I plan on "playing" in lakes and small rivers (carmans & nissy type). I would otherwise go buy a new full motion vest...just wondering your thoughts. Thanks!

I'm not a fan of them but in a pinch they'll do.I do not own one.
If I go over( fall out/get swamped/dumped etc) I want my PFD to already be working.
And if a head gets bumped and you hit the water unconscious...
I want my "life vest" working on keeping me afloat right from the get go.

I'm sure others will chime in on this.
Good question and I'm glad its been asked

agree...

I hear what your saying and think you answered my question. I originally bought it for wading in the surf and didn't really do to much of that...when it comes to your "life" i think I want it working already. chances of hitting my head rendering me unconsious in the upper peconic river are probably slim to none but who wants to take that 1% chance! My 6 year olde certainly isn't going to save me (though he'd try his darndest) and he really likes me around...Think I'll go buy a new one. Thanks and be safe!

You cant put a price on your life. This is something that is not worth skimping on.

Also, even though there is a 1% chance of something happening , it could happen and you need to be ready for it. Accidents can happen anywhere, the ocean , a calm bay , a lake , even your pool. Safety needs to be at the top of the list when it comes to being on the water.

Well said, I totally agree with the above quote.

One other reason for concern with inflatible PFDs is reentry. I have a manual inflate that I use for surf fishing in difficult locations. I tried it with the yak and when inflated it causes lots of difficulty getting in the way trying to get back into the boat. I no longer use it in the kayak for that very reason.

thanks this is a valuable real life experience-
I have both a Cabellas Yak vest and an Auto inflate - I mostly wear the Yak vest
as it has storage - but when I want to feel light - I wear the Auto inflate - But now I will stick with the yak vest - thanks

Helmets as well as PFDs

Just a couple of thoughts...

I enjoy sea kayaking (rarely fishing - just cruising) as much as banging around in my diesel barge offshore. I prefer to wear a conventional PFD. Finding one that is short enough to be comfortable when seated can be difficult. You may check out the hard core sea kayak shops to find one that will be comfortable to wear for a day of fishing and paddling.

Also, regarding the comment about the slim chance of hitting your head, I hope this remains true. However you mention paddling on a river. Most river kayakers wear a helmet - as do sea kayakers when surfing on open coast lines or going in for a beach landing. If you go over in shallow water, you will want to be wearing a helmet. I use my windsurfing helmet but you can find good ones at either kayak or windsurf shops.

Safe Paddling.
