last trip out my 85hp yamaha stopped spitting water. My first thought is to change the impellar (last changed three years ago ) but then I thought maybe I would need to replace the water pump. Anyone know how you can tell which of these needs to be replaced?

If you do any shallow water fishing, ie flats fishing, you need to change the impellar at least every other year. So you should probably change yours. I changed mine this sping, and mine engine still wasn't spitting out water. I determined that the hose that spits out the water was clogged, and by simply blowing on it, it cleared the clog. Try that first, your problem may be that simple.

Water pump

When you take the lower unit off to change the impeller, you will have to take the water pump apart. Then you can tell if the water pump housing is damaged. The pump is made up of the housing and the impeller.

Good Luck

Certainly not cost effictive if the only worn part is the impellar, the rubber star is the impellar and it's easy to determine if the rubber is worn, of damaged. You are basicly taking apart your water pump to check the impellar but if the housing and O rings are in good shape why spend the money to change whats not broken? Marine is anything but cheap, but it you have the money I suppose it's cheaper than a costly repair for an overheated motor.

I take down my lower unit and replace the water pump every season. I have a 150 Yamaha and the cost is under $50 for a water pump kit.

I may be over cautious, but I don't want to have any problems during the season.

But, Bassman may be right. Check the plastic piece that is plugged into the housing of your engine where the return hose spits out the water. It is probably clogged. Blow it out or use a piece of straight steel to bore it out by hand. Tatdah! problem solved.
