togmaster i agree
but many people turn a blind eye or deaf ear to the damage being done by recreational fisherman as well.
they see the large commercial boats and direct all their anger and frustration at them, when the problem is ALSO the guy in the 22' center console next to them keeping that extra fish, or that fish that is just 1/4" short.
it might be just one fish, but add up all the times that is done and it really adds up to a very large problem.
i see this all the time at the local marinas, rec. fisherman makeup their own version of the rules, such as:
keeping 2 bass per person, they just claim they are a charter boat and they are taking out fares, now ofcourse they are not charter boats, but this is the reasoning they use on a DAILY basis to poach. this is common practice for many boats in this area, and since everybody else is doing it, everyone feels its ok.
since enforcement is so lax, they just get away with it, if you get caught, they feel you were just unlucky that day.
this year i see lots of guys keeping 16" fluke, when i asked a few fisherman about this they tell me,
the 17" size is unreasonable for this area, and they won't keep any fish under 16". again enforcement is so lax, that if you get caught you were just unlucky.
the problem is in both camps, recreational and commercial.
and as i have stated before, both sides must work TOGETHER to get anywhere on this matter.
stepping up to the table with the attitude "i want all the commercial guys out" will not get anybody anywhere.
this must be a combined effort to make the resourse better for both.
the fight is with the government agencies that control the fisheries and manage them in a political fashion instead of whats good for the fishery.
that is where the problem is.
fix that and there will be more than enough fish for all.
